Well it's kinda related. My neighbor just offered me a Wayne 60 gas pump, been sitting in her garage since 1974. I suspect its made of cast iron, but I have no idea what the thing might weigh. I'm supposed to move it next weekend, and I'm trying to get an idea of what sort of dolly, hand truck & how many men it will take. I'll post pictures when it's home.

They are heavy two people should be able to put it in the back of a pickup truck. Easiest way is to angle a sheet of plywood out of the truck bed then lean the pump againstthe plywood and slide it in, a couch cushion works good to protect the sight glass. John |

Vern,
Yes they are very heavy. I would guess 200 lbs. I have a Wayne 60 which I moved awhile back from around our house to my shop. What a job for one person! If you use a hand truck, take along a sheet of plywood maybe 2 ft x 2 ft or so because the pump has four legs on it and you have to set the four legs on the plywood and then put your hand truck under the plywood. The metal sides of the pump are thin metal and will not support the weight of the pump on your hand truck. My pump was last licensed in 1953 and the price on the dial was 31 1/2 cents! I had thought about restoring it to operating condition. But then I got to thinking about what to do with it after I got it operating and decided that it was not worth it. you can't enjoy driving them like you can an A. Plus my wife would not let me put it in the family room so it still sits outside of my shop. Some guys take the "guts" out of them (to reduce the weight) and then they do put them in their family rooms or some other place to show them off. Anyway, good luck with your new item. BTW there are a number of web sites that give you a lot of information about these gas pumps.

I bought a tall Tokheim and I went alone. Big mistake. I strugled with it big time, and unloading it I broke the glass on one of the sides. Take some help with you.

I recently brought home a visual gas pump that was over 7ft high. I took three of my sons strong friends & several partially inflated inner tubes for cushions to lay the pump on in the back of my truck. The original glass cylinder survived the move.

For those of you who have shown interest, the old gas pump got moved to my house this morning. I only had enought time to take a quick photo; will do more later. It is a Wayne model 70 from what I can determine. Man, that thing is HEAVY! We strapped it to a refigerator dolly, pushed it into the truck bed and then pulled it out at my house. It sits where it landed right now. My neighbor had the original plates, the nozzle and a petrified hose. I can't decide whether to take the pump parts out or just leave them alone; it's going to be basic yard art for the time being. But it is cool.

Nice find at a great price! Do you have the glass, too. I am pretty sure it is not a Model 70. I think it is a model 60.

Fred at 200 pounds I think you're being generous. Those brutes weigh a lot more than that.
If you ever move a visible gas pump and it still has the glass cylinder intact, DON'T pick it up at the top of the pump carry it by the base and one or two guys at the bottom of the cylinder around the middle of the pump. If you carry it by the top, you are putting pressure on that glass and it more than likely will 'pop' making a sound like a light bulb falling on the floor, as the glass cracks and breaks out, and it will cost you dearly to buy a new glass cylinder. If you can fine one. Acrylic cylinders are available but they ain't cheap plus they are junk, takes away from the value of the pump. |
