Default 59ab inner distibutor cap chipped???

I bought a brand new inner distibutor cap for my 59ab engine. When I went to install it on to the distbutor the inside lower edge of the cap ( the part that sits into the distibutor) chipped off. I noticed that the original cap was the same way and was wondering if this is common and will it affect anything?

Thanks

It probably wont do any harm as long as the line up lug is not broke off. A lot of those inner cap fit to tight into the dist. You should file them down so they fit in easier. Walt

I usually need to belt sand them to get a good fit . Metric off shore measurements are different ..........

The same cap goes on both left and right. You'll see also that each plug wire receptacle is marked for two numbers, one set for left, the other for right. The notch for the lug is located differently on those two sides. They should fit with no force applied. The old phrenolic caps have swelled over the years, requiring dressing thyem down to fit.

Which inner caps are you folks talking about? The original post referred to a 59ab distributor which should be a two bolt '45-'48 with a rabbit ear outer cap. I know the inner caps for the earlier '32 to '41 distributors usually need some light sanding on the outer diameter to make them fit into both ends of the housing but I didn't think the inner cap of the 59ab rabbit ear distributor requires any sanding to fit. Are we possibly giving the original poster the wrong information? Or do the two bolt '45-'48 distributors also require sanding of their inner cap to fit properly?

Its on the inside of the cap. Its a little square tit that sticks down to properly aline the cap to the slot. ken ct.
