Question 34 Cowl Light Mounting Question

Have a question about mounting the Cowl Lights on my 34 five window. Since I got the car the cowl light where missing. There is a hole in the side of the cowl that I assume they go into. Tried mounting them in the hole but the clearance to the door seems too close. Today I found on Mac's site rubber washers for the cowl lights. In the diagram they look tapered. Did a search on cowl light mounting and came up empty. Just wondering if some one could post a diagram on how to mount the cowl light with the tapered washers?

Thanks

Rich

I have a 34 and mounted the cowl lights so that the tapered washer; larger side goes toward the engine , as the cowl is tapered slightly towards the engine hood, this makes them face directly forward instead of an angle...try that out ...

Rich , The repops of the " cowl lamp mounting pads " are fairly soft rubber . Gennie ones are heavy paper and are indeed tapered on one side . I sent some pics trying to show that the flange this sits against on the cowl lamp arm is cocked slightly . Pic 2 & 3 show this . Pic 1 shows a gennie pad properly installed . As you are looking at the lamp on a car the thick part goes at about 2:30 with the flat side towards the body . If you are using gennie lamps put the pad , washer and nut on and snug it down and you will see what I am talking about . Remember that factory ones were stiff heavy paper and did a better job of holding the lamp stationary . The rubber ones pretty much just squash but if you are using hard stock type ones and install the tapered side towards the body you cannot get it tight . Good Luck David J

Another example of the crap that is being pushed on us today as "exactly like the original". Not worth a crap.

If you look under the cowl you will see a reinforcing piece with a little hole in it ,this is to drill. All std cars had it so it should give you a idea were the light should be ,

when installed the rear of the cowl lamp is very close to the door. When opening the door passes about 1/2 inch from the rear of the lamps.

I machined some spacers from black plastic stock with a different taper.I could not improve the position of the lights So back with stock .The angle of the stem and the mounting hole surface makes it hard to improve. Lee34

Got the spacers today and bummer they are soft rubber.

I will use them anyway because I don't have a choice. Let you know how they worked out.

Thanks

Rich
