7tooth steering shaft install
Hello All'
I removed bottom of steering column parts bearings etc,I then with great difficulty got the upper bushing out. When I removed the upper bushing the shaft slid down and rested on the floor. Can I just slide it back up or do I need to remove part of the steering box so the worm gear could end up where its supposed to be. When I try to push it back up it stops about 3'' short for the wheel. I figured if it fell out it should go back in LOL. pitman arm was still attached so sure could use some advice. Tks for all the past help you folks are great. DJ |

Re: 7tooth steering shaft install
Since it is a worm screw drive, it may need to be rotated back in but the sector gear has to be indexed for proper position in straight ahead centering. The spline steering wheel type are likely less critical than the keyed type but it still has to center with the same basic amount of shaft turns lock to lock.
Worst case would require the sector to be pulled out to center it but you may be able to play with it and get it indexed. This wouldn't be possible on 2-tooth. Last edited by rotorwrench; 10-20-2023 at 03:35 PM. |

Re: 7tooth steering shaft install
I will second what Rotorwrench said. The centering is not critical as it will be centered when the pitman arm and drag link are connected up with the wheels straight ahead. If you do want to center it, turn the shaft from lock to lock and count the turns than go back half that number.
