Default Tire sizes

I purchased 17” wheels from I believe a 1934 Ford Model B ( not sure) but they are 17” wheels and I want to put radial tires on the wheels. I need to know what size tires people have used when replacing the original wheels on your Model A. I have a 1931 Model A Coupe I am rebuilding and don’t plan on putting fenders on it but would like to run smaller tires in front and larger in rear. Any suggestions would be appreciated. 5/ 5.5 bolt pattern, with 4.5 width. I would also need to have tubes tires. This is king to be a 4 cyl. B engine Roadster

You may have a very limited choice of tires for the 17 inch wheels. I think a better choice would be to use either 16 inch '35 wheels or 18 inch '32 wheels. You will find much a much better selection of tire sizes for these than 17 inch wheels.

My opinion,

CW is absolutely correct. Almost nothing comes in a 17.

16 will be easiest. sell the 17s and buy 16s.

First you say: "I want to put radial tires on the wheels.", then you say "I would also need to have tubes tires."
Which is it?

Ronn is right. There was a recent thread that dealt with this idea. You can achieve this by putting 6.00/16’s on the front and 7.00+/16’s on the back.

I’m confused. You said you’re working on a 31 Coupe but later you said “This is king (sic) to be a 4 cyl. B engine Roadster.”

I think it is prudent to use tubes in any tyre fitted to a rim without the safety ridge and it is illegal here to do so. There is no conflict here as far as I'm concerned.

The engine in my 1931 is a B engine. The 17” wheels I have require a tube which you can use a radial tire as long it is a radial tube. What is am asking is because the width is 4.5” has anyone run a wider trim in a narrower rim? If so how much wider did you go?

You would probably have better luck on the V8 forum where those tires are used. All of the passenger cars used the same 17 inch rims regardless of the engine in 1933 and 1934.
