Is this the right T5 for the T5 conversion to Ford V8 Flathead on my 35? My engine is a 1949 8BA. Add says its for an 96-99 Chev S10. I think thats the one with the short tail so shifter position is right?

Hey Tony .... You knew The Coopman was gonna be all over this one. Sheldon in post #2 is correct. That trans in the eBay ad AIN'T nothin' like what you want. And the T5 in Sheldon's post IS the correct T5 CASE & TAIL HOUSING for what MOST guys are trying to do with T5s in these old Fords, which is a T5 with the "S10 Tail Shaft Housing", allowing the shifter to sit quite a bit forward of where MOST T5 shifters sit. But, as many of you have heard me preach a dozen times before, you will likely be really DISAPPOINTED WIITH THE GEAR SET that is inside the "S-10 T5". One more thing ..... you haven't exactly confirmed that you want to convert over to an open drive set-up, 'cuz the trans that Sheldon showed above will require an open drive shaft and the rear end conversion to support that. Tony ..... I want you to click on the link directly BELOW. It is a far better description of the T5 that you want to assemble to use in one of these old Fords. IT'll answer a lot of questions for you. Then, we'll talk! https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showp...49&postcount=7 Coop . |

With the manual speedo drive S10 T5's becoming increasingly hard to find I have a number of the T5 trans I sell using the electronic sender. Many of my customers have used Cable X with some success. Not the best alternative but does the job.

I like to ise the Ford style case as the adapter to the flathead is nly $160 and the and the box is stronger. Biggest problem is the rear axle. Rather than use the stock ford unitconvert to open drive spicer 35/44 some of these have posi units and are much cheaper than the ford 8". I'd stay away from the 9" very heavy poor ride quality.

Gramps' Gran Cherokee rear with about 100 lbs of brackets and garbage welded-on. That rear cover covers some really wimpy gears. YOU need disc brakes in rear? ![]() Nice and clean '57 Ford 9" rear. You'd never know the difference by driving the two. Try finding reasonably-priced (or available) parts for that Cherokee rear! Coop . |

Cable X converts the transmission electronic pulse signal into a mechanical signal when it goes thru their converter box and turns a short speedometer cable that hooks to the speedo.

The rear swap is tied to my wallet. Thr 9&0 in rears are very expensive, so that eliminates them for me. The spicer 44 from a jeep GC with posi is very cheap Buck wise andputting it on leaf springs do different. I don't think disk brakes are necessary on the rear. Now the weight of the rear axle isn't that important, but in a light car hard to control with shocks on Vermont roads.
Gramps PS the 44 isn't that light either the 35 is better, but hard to find with psi. G |
