Any experience with this transmission? Is it worth the expense?

Re: Mitchell syncromesh transmission
Sure is ----- my opinion. I have the plus 15% version in both first and second as well as the second/third synchros. Fits perfectly. I did the installation by myself and worked maybe 5 hours a day at it. Took me 10 days to complete. Along the way I cleaned up a lot of little things on my list that had nothing to do with installing the transmission. It makes my little truck a lot more "traffic" friendly.

Re: Mitchell syncromesh transmission
Yes it is, in fact I bought two of them. My wife really likes it even though she can double clutch.

Re: Mitchell syncromesh transmission
I have one on my Fordor. It is a good transmission and shifts well. You still have to double clutch to get into first when rolling. It does make the shifting in second and third much easier.
Whether it is worth it depends on how long you have been driving Model A's with syncrho smash transmissions. If you are used to double clutching then it may not be worth it to you. If you have a growler then buying a Mitchell transmission will solve that problem.

Re: Mitchell syncromesh transmission
It made the difference between my wife sharing with driving or me having to do all the driving.
Turning your head to the left and watching your wife drive your Model A and enjoying it is almost better than the other marital benefits. |

The reason I am interested in the syncro is so that my children can borrow and drive car |

Re: Mitchell syncromesh transmission
A lot cheaper and less work to just teach them how to drive an A.
For me, that was some quality time teaching my three girls to drive and shift the A |

Re: Mitchell syncromesh transmission
I agree with the comments about the value of the cogbox and how wives are more receptive to the idea that they drive.
Now, how do I get the keys back from her???

Re: Mitchell syncromesh transmission
I agree with the rest. I guy can puff up his chest and say “I can double clutch better than any man alive I didn’t need no Synchro Transmission, been good enough for the last 90 years ain’t it?” But after you have driven the Mitchell for the first mile you will admit to yourself that it’s pretty sweet.

Re: Mitchell syncromesh transmission
I’m sure Bruce can speak to this but in my experience, if you do a lot of parades, you won’t want the 15% higher first gear, only second gear + 15%.

Honey it’s time to rotate the tire, change the oil, lub the chassis ! Now if she does all that she can keep the car

Re: Mitchell syncromesh transmission
I like the transmissions the way God made them. Next thing they will be putting automatic transmissions in Model A's. Wait a minute...never mind.

Re: Mitchell syncromesh transmission
I already have 4 Model As but her favourite is the one I set up for myself. Maybe another synchro gearbox is calling.

Re: Mitchell syncromesh transmission
I don't have any trouble driving an A with a stock trans. It's all about learning the timing.

Re: Mitchell syncromesh transmission
I promised my wife that I would make my RPU drivable for her (I really didn’t have an option). Synchro trans is a must.
