Default "Backup camera? We never needed 'em"

This was in late October 2021. We wanted to catch the Northern Lights so we drove to a North facing beach after dinner. My wife and I were chatting away and I decided to turn around while it was still light out, as the small mirrors and no backup light can make it a challenge. The road is quite wide and the turn broad so I didn't give it a lot of thought, just swung the tail around......Once I encountered the wet grass I was done for. I dropped out of the low side door and after seeing the situation, shoulda crawled out on the high side. My buddy that runs the triple A franchise was off island so the kid that showed up in the wrecker was his new son in law, who after the tow told me it was his first 'solo'. I stood on the high side running board for ballast. Cop gave me his brief test and agreed I was not under the influence. Tow was fine. Not a ding or scratch on anything, And as a woodie builder am very happy to report that all six doors were opened and closed several times for various reasons, like getting the dog out, cellphones etc and all six operated exactly as if I were parked on level ground even while tilted into that monsterous ditch. We drove home as if nothing had ever happened. Glad for that foot rest alongside the accelerator as I may have been shaking a bit still.

That looks like a precarious position Gary. Glad there was no damage. I think most anyone would be shaken, it looks like it could have rolled.

Can't believe it didn't. There was a 6x6 fence post poised at about dead center between the doors, that would have ruined the car (and me) if it had......

You should have run right down and bought a lottery ticket, as luck
was surely on your side that day. Glad everything seem ok on it yet.

Ouch. I had a mom of one of my son’s friends do that on the way to a baseball game with a caravan. There were a bunch of kids so had some get on the hood/ bumper and we lifted the low side and when traction returned just drove out. She was pretty shook, but was not an expensive deal.

Definitely a good test of your woodworking ability.....we’re all as happy as you that there was no damage!......after 40 yrs of backing up trailer trucks, the backup camera on my wife’s SUV scares the hell out of me and I never use it.......Mark

One item in a well stocked travel rig is an extra roll of toilet paper. Hope you were well stocked!

Even with Marmon-Herrington quadra-trac it would have been a difficult exit from that ditch! The steel corner braces inside kept the body squre thruout the situation! Bill

Wow! And you were doing the sensible thing by trying to turn around when it was still light!
Glad you and the truck made it out of there unscathed!
Mart.
