Oil can with bracket, what do I have?
Hi guys!
Someone I met at a flea market sent me here, I have this Ford oil can with the mounting bracket still on it. I would like to sell it however I need to know what I have before I do as prices on eBay are all over the place. ($30-$200) There is not an "E" on the reverse, I'm hoping that the bracket helps identify/increase the value. I do know enough to not clean it, this is copper (correct?). Any though on a value? I lost my job and this is the only income I have for now. I'm a Ford guy too BTW, my first car was a 1966 Mustang and I still have her. Thanks a lot! I've attached photos. |

That's a nice one. Don''t clean the oil can, leave the patina on it. The can is steel and originally copper plated.
The bracket is made for steel firewall, not the early wood firewall T's . So that bracket is kinda neat. eBay will bring the highest price, good photos, and make sure your listing ends on a Sunday evening , lots of bidders at home from work and bored of watching TV, you will get the high bids! |

Re: Oil can with bracket, what do I have?
Thanks for the reply tmodelman, and there is no way I'm rubbing off this patina!
So it's definetly not off of a model T then. I didn't know what forum to post this on, if I repost this on the model A forum will that be seen as "spamming" the boards? I don't want to be rude and I TRULY appreciate the help these kind of boards give. I always list on Tuesday night but maybe I'll try listing this on a Sunday, that's a good point. |

I think you will find that Tmodelman means that it will work on the later Ts that had steel firewalls. You will get the best coverage on the auction if you list model A &/or T in the title. I am sure I am not alone in wondering what else that is interesting that you have for sale. You will have to look hard to find more pack-rats in one place than right here! |

Re: Oil can with bracket, what do I have?
Thanks <b>Jack</b>, I find all kinds of cool stuff. Most of my stuff goes to the flea market however this week I saved a wooden gas measuring stick from Atlantic oil, a quart oil can and this oil can so far. I won't be listing anything on eBay until I figure out what this is though because I want to list it all at once. I use the ID Indianfield on eBay too.
As a recovering pack rat, I'm not sure I should hang out here much then! |

Thanks, that was what I meant, just left out the 'T' part! Typical oil can brackets were pressed metal, and use screws to go to the firewall. That single wire type with bolt fastener is unusual, and would be easy to mount, and would look fine on a steel era T, the ones with the black radiator....... |

Re: Oil can with bracket, what do I have?
Thanks guys, you've been so helpful!
I'm going to ask on the model A forum as well because someone else thought it may be from a late Model A (but that was just a guess).Would someone would lose points in a car show for using this bracket on a Model T? Thanks again! |

Re: Oil can with bracket, what do I have?
Yes, the bracket is just an accessory, made non-Ford, show judging requires the Model T to only have the factory tools. Now that oil can is factory Model T, but it was supplied in a box of tools and a tool roll with each car. Never was mounted to the car. The owner would do what he wanted.
Here is a correct display of tools supplied with the 1912 Ford, all are authetic and points would be deducted if these were not displayed with the T. |

Re: Oil can with bracket, what do I have?
Nice oilcan & bracket. It looks like a 'Noera, Conn.' made one? If so quote what is written on it when selling.
Oilcans were only a Model A item for about first half of '28. I have seen same bracket as yours used on Model A firewall, but slightly different oilcan. Goodluck. |

Re: Oil can with bracket, what do I have?
So did Ford make any of the brackets for accessories? Was it the same on a Model A? I can see how an owner would wat to mount the oil can as it would seem to me that the can would leak eventually.
Also were those tools marked "Ford"? What about the cans that I see on eBay marked with an "E", were they really for the Edsel? Cool tool bag BTW, it's amazing the amount of detail people go to when showing their cars. There isn't anything written on the bracket. Hey, thanks again guys! I like learning new stuff, mainly so I know what to look for. |

Re: Oil can with bracket, what do I have?
No, Ford made no accessories for the Model T until very late in 1924, you could get a factory wiper, mirror, and bumpers!
There is so much about Ford Model T tools, you could never find out, over 15 T's were sold and all came with tool kits. Tools are marked with Ford script usually, and with factory part number. The oil cans were made by many companies for Ford, so marks are important for years of use. The very early Norea cans had a bayonet type lid, the more common have screw top lid. If you really want to learn about Ford Tools for the T and A, join the Tool Club,,,,,'' http://www.fordtoolcollector.org/index.asp The attached picture is a newly restored and re-copper plated early rare Norea oil can for the Ts.....marked made in Waterbury CT |

Re: Oil can with bracket, what do I have?
That's a cool website! Wish I had that 155 pg reference manual last week before I sold all those old tools at the flea market.
That oil can is sure more shinny that mine! I guess that's what a fresh coat of copper would do. I had to double check to make sure mine doesn't have that wrighting on the lid, nope it doesn't (shucks!) I'll post a link after this is listed tonight so you can see what this item that you helped me with brought. |

Re: Oil can with bracket, what do I have?
For those who are wondering, the oil can brought $430 !! Likely more than the car it was hung on cost new!
Does anyone have an idea if it was the can or the bracket that is worth that kind of cash? Well sold! I am going out to look through the box of oil cans that has been accumulating in my barn for years now! - Ill bet I am not the only one!!! |

Re: Oil can with bracket, what do I have?
Jack
That has to be the world record and will be for sometime! The wire bracket was kind of neat, but only about $50 neat to me. That oil can is a typical $30 one.....oh my........there were two bidders that wanted it bad, yet the final bidder (new one) got it!!! Unreal world today |
