Default Upgrade 6Volt generator to 12 Volt

If i understood it right.
I have a 59AB 6 Volt generator with an external Generator Voltage Regulator

And If I buy one of this Generator Field Coil and replace the 6 volt Field coil.

YearPart Number Required NumberUnit Of Measure
1956-1964 B6AZ-10175-D 1 EACH

And then buy this Generator Voltage Regulator

YearPart Number Required NumberUnit Of Measure
1956-1963 C3TZ-10505-B 1 EACH

30 AMP, REPLACEMENT TYPE, 12 VOLT.

You will have an original looking 12Volt 30 Amp charging system

Any tips and trix is welcome.

Right...or swap in everything from a '56-63 generator on your '48 front plate. If you use late armature (after detailed comparison, I have NO idea whether it differs electrically...numbers of segments, etc., seem same, wires look same gauge) you need late rear plate, as bearing area is totally different.
If you swap fields you will have a major war with those shoe bolts. Pressure helps, as with a screwdriver held in a drill press for downward force, but you need to make up a Pole jack support to prevent distorting case. Bolts plus a coupling nut.

Hi, Just like Bruce says, put your front plate on a 56 or later generator and use the 56 or later regulator. Works fine, I just finished this conversion on my 36 pickup.

Or as mentioned a week or so ago on this forum, you can leave your 6-volt generator alone, and simply regulate it to 12 volts with a 12-volt regulator. 8^)

Im not saying it wouldnt work, but it sounds a bit to easy.
And why did Ford make the new field coil's if they didnt need to?
My guess is that the 6 volt Field coil will run hotter than the 12 Volt, shortening the life of the generator.

Anyone got pictures of a Pole jack support of some kind? Or some homebuilt contraption.

I've got the exact setup that you describe in my '47 COE. Works like a champ. I did not do the conversion work but it was done by the following:

Bill Jungck
PMX Custom Alternators and Starters

I think he's up in Portland, Oregon. I haven't had any issues with my converted generator so I believe his work to be sound. He might be able to convert your generator or he may have one on the shelf ready to go. He has the regulators too and does bench testing before sending out the parts.

As for running the stock 6V generator with a 12V regulator, I don't think it's a good idea...I'll have a few ideas why but I'd have to research before committing to them. Besides, if it were that simple, it would be done often and this is the first I've heard of it.

I would be leary of only changing the regulator, like others said, why did Ford change the gen. and reg.? My car isn't finished but I will be doing the 56-63 12v gen in orig 6v housing. my $.02

I have done a couple. Due to the scarcity of parts over here I get rebuilt 62 generators from macs and put the front plate and pulley off a dead 6v on it and hook it up to a 12v regulator.

There are a couple of different bore sizes of front pulleys, it is the larger one you need. Can't remember the size but could check if needed.

The main reason I went 12v was for the halogens as I occasionally do night time reliability trials.
