Default engine oil pump

The oil pump drawing seen in vendor catalogs dawn by the late Howard Barnes show a single hex bolt retaining the oil pump screen cover. I have one that I recently removed from an engine that has two straight slot screwdriver bolts holding the cover in place. I also came across one that does not have any bolts holding it. The method of attachment is the peening over of the metal on the collar it fits down over. I suspect this is an early version and was discontinued because they came loose. I would think it would create strange noises coming from the engine.

Can anyone provide information about the evolution of the Model A oil pump.

The early pumps that I have has the screen cover soldered in place. These pumps mostly have a forged housing rather than cast like the later oil pumps. The early pumps usually have an under cut shaft like the B pump but use different thickness bushings. I always avoid using this type oil pump but many were used well into 1929 .

Hi Tom,

You can find lots of info about the oil pump on Pluck's website under "Additional Studies" -

I just tried it . A popup jumped up with an allow or don't allow choice. I made the mistake of clicking on the allow choice. No info about oil pumps showed up. I had to shut down my computor to get off of it. I don't recommend going there.

Thanks Mike, still no luck . I get the same pop up , something about an adobe systems agreement . Thanks anyway . I'm fairly familiar with the early oil pumps, just wanted to see what Pluck had to say about them.

Purdy, Pluck's file is in the widely used Adobe .pdf format - (portable document format) for sharing files across all computer operating systems. You need a free Adobe PDF Reader file to access these files; it appears that your browser may be trying to install a PDF reader to allow you to read the file.

Thanks Rich, I don't know a lot about computors. It kinda scaired me a little when I couldn't get off the pop up. My better half that knows way more than I do told me to just shut er down and it worked to get off of it anyway . I think I'll just stay away from it .

My thanks to Steve also . I received his dissertation on the many model A oil pumps and changes, some older than the soldered cover pumps that I have in my collection. My thought is that the later pumps with the bolted on cover is the better way to go in any case .

My engine number in my 1929 Model A is A2027757 so the engine is July 1929. I wanted to change the oil pump screen so I removed it. My screen cover is peened on as stated earlier but I could still remove the screen. When I look at the parts catalog I see a lower plate gasket which my pump doesn't have, should it have one? When I scrapped the pump housing surface it appears that it had maybe a liquid type sealer and certainly not a Form A Gasket type material between the pump housing and the lower cover plate. I hope the screen can be easily push on once I resolve the gasket question?
Thanks for any reply!

I don't use the lower gasket. The lower gasket is only sometimes needed as a shim if repro pump gears rub the lower plate. a lower gasket increases the area inside the pump and decreases oil pressure.
