The early fors did not use variable res, there was a set of points that would make or break which kept the gauge moving

The King Sealey system was a variable amperage system. Some have had semi success at replacing the tank sender with the more modern rheostat types that are available from vendors but you have to play with the length of the float arm and adjust the arm for best overall function to get it to provide a useable indication for each application.

Is your friend mimicking the voltage regulation that the original sending unit provides? I cannot speak to the Classic Instruments unit, but we do it differently.

I did not know that about the original '36 sender unit.

Yearsr ago I installed a repo sender unit connected to the original gauge, and the gauge continually hunts up and down as I am driving with no clear indication of how much gas is in the tank. Could this be the cause of it (newer style rheostat sender coupled to an original gauge)?

We have a reasonable success rate of rebuilding the original King Seeley sending units. Generally, as with any restoration, it depends on what we're starting with. Many of our customers have found that the aftermarket senders being advertised are incorrect and will not operate the gauge accurately or otherwise.
