Steve; We use a 1985 Ford Tk 150 4 speed. A machine shop in Mich will convert it for you. e-mail for the shop. [email protected]

Gary Bernard makes one here in Ft. Worth. We have about 25,000 on his without a problem. And i know a lot more people who have his with a lot more miles, and its still going strong. Email me for contact info.

Thanks for the plug Tom, and I am doing ONE, and its for me! Doing brakes for fellows up here keeps me busy enough! I need some free time too, trying to drive the wheels off my Roaster ya know!

There is another person who makes kits to do this install. His name is Ken Parker in Van, Texas and he posts on fordbarn. His contact information is: Phone - 903-963-1650 or e-mail ([email protected]). The kits run around $2700 complete. I have done this install myself without a kit and I wrote an outline of the procedure I used. I can send that to you if you are interested. Probably cost you slightly less than half the $2700 to do it yourself.

Sounds like the first step in making a Model A into a street rod.

Usually a high compression head is the first step. I did my own trans (similar to Al's) and it makes the "A" a pleasure to drive. Ron W

The 4 speed is a completely different transmission from the 3 speed with overdrive.
Upgrading parts on a car does not make it a streetrod. It simply makes it more useable

Well not so fast, ...."more usable"?? Model-As, --amazingly to some, --were WERE very usable for some 50+ years until someone (erroneously) convinced other peers that the original transmissions were not usable any longer.

And so we are clear, "upgrading" is perfectly acceptable on a 'Restored' vehicle if it is undetectable. A high-compression head can be undetectable, insert bearings inside the engine is considered undetectable, a hi-speed ring & pinion is considered undetectable. A F-150 transmission IS detectable ...even in Helen Keller's eyes!!

Brent, the F150 is only detectable if you crawl under the car and look. And it is a much more concealed upgrade then the Mitchell overdrive unit. And 99.9% of the people who look at the car, won't know it's there!!!

What we need is a nice 4 speed overdrive that fits inside the stock tranny case.
