Default 1938 Generator/Ignition...help

I've been looking all over and I can't seem to find much info on it, but I have a 2 brush 6v generator and every so often it likes to smoke the gauge wire when its not running and the ignition is on for a few seconds. I put a reproduction cowl harness on it and there aren't any shorts anywhere. Followed the schematic and when the car runs all the wires are cool with no hot spots. Its a positive ground as well, new regulator, polarized. After driving for about 20 mins the generator doesn't charge as well, ammeter reads 0 or less all the time. Any help would be awesome.
Rebuilt the dizzy too, any advice for the vacuum advance brake settings or set adjuster screw on the passenger side would be much appreciated.
