Re: American Cars In Germany In The 50's
I was drafted in '57 and spent all of '58 and half of '59 in Pirmasens, about 50 kilometers from Kaiserslautern. Most if the time there I had a 1950 Mercedes 170S which I paid $100 for. I sold the Mercedes to another GI for the same price I paid for it and bought a new VW for $1143. It cost around $100 to ship the car to Hoboken, NJ so I could pick it up when I got discharged at Fort Harrison, NY. I drove the car to Texas non-stop in less than two days. I still miss that good Parkbraü. My wife and I were in Germany last year and visited my old haunts. The barracks are still there (old WWII Luftwaffe barracks) but they are rundown and mostly abandoned.

Re: American Cars In Germany In The 50's
Parkbrau!!! What a fantastic "local brew". I preferred the red label Export vs the green Pilsner, but that was probably an uneducated palate.
Miesau was my job site - I just lived on Ramstein. What was better than a Parkbrau & a Curry Wurst???? We seem to have a lot of MP's here - myself included. I drove a $600 Mercedes 240E - that I sold for $600 when I PCS'd - and a Porsche 914.

Re: American Cars In Germany In The 50's
We arrived back home this evening. We had a great reunion. One member and his wife drove from Wisconsin to be with us and to see a fellow worker he hadn't seen since 1958. I wish you could have seen the expressions on their faces when they first saw each other for the first time in nearly 56 years! Priceless!
