39` Ford Transmission
What would I need for adaptors, and any modifications to convert a stock Model A transmission to a 39` Ford syncromesh transmission? Thank you.

Re: 39` Ford Transmission
You need one of these from Dennis Cling
It seems the mods don't like links to businesses, so you'll have to do your own google search I'm afraid. I got mine from Sammy at Arizona Model A. Cheers Juggs |

Re: 39` Ford Transmission
Isn't part of the reason of going to the '39 transmitter the higher 1st and 2nd ? The fact that they are 'circumcised ' is nice, but, double-clutching is quickly learned.
I too have been debating on whether to go the '39 route or a Mitchell with the higher 1st and 2nd. I like the idea of the higher lower gears. |

Re: 39` Ford Transmission
I couldn`t even get signed off on driving a Ford 5th wheel tractor with 10 speed road ranger in the military. I guess it just wasn`t ment to be. I have my worst time down shifting going down hill.

Re: 39` Ford Transmission
There are a variety of gear ratios for the V8 top loader trans, and over the years there has been much mixing and matching of parts and ratios, so check the gear sets on any trans you buy. "39 transmission" has almost become a generic term for any topload V8 trans, even if it has a 37 case, 38 gearset, 39 shifter, 40 synchros.
Any one thinking of putting in a V8 transmission should browse Van Pelt Sales website which has a lot of good info. Here is the link to the gear ratio chart. http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/f...gearratios.htm The MItchell trans with the 15% higher gearset is fairly close to the 28 tooth '39 gearset. Easier to swap in, has synchromesh, looks authentic, you know for sure what you are getting, but more expensive. |

Re: 39` Ford Transmission
Tried to teach my wife how to dbl clutch, it did not go well. 39 transmission for our car so she can drive it without tearing the transmission up and enjoy the car. Rod

Re: 39` Ford Transmission
I have a '39 transmission AND a Mitchell Overdrive ( about 90,000 miles). It is a dream on the highway and a joy to drive here in the Sierra foothills of California. Smooth shifts and Lower engine RPM's

Re: 39` Ford Transmission
If I wanted smooth shifting of the gears, I would have kept my Ford Ranger with 5 speeds (1990's).
This is a Model A forum...right? Marc |
