Default 40 Sedan Fuel Line Replacement:

My 40 two-door sedan has rubber hose sections in the metal fuel line from tank to front. Is this stock or why would someone have done this?I am not sure how the routing of the fuel line goes. The old line goes along the frame rail until it get to rear and then it goes in and out of holes in frame at rear wheel. Is this the way it should be?How many clamps are on the stock fuel line?Is there a diagram of the fuel line routing or any one have any photos?I got a copper line kit with fitttings and would like to replace the complete fuel line.

The original fuel line was 1/4 in. steel with a flxible hose on the firewall. Someone may have used rubber pieces as it's cheaper and easier. Be sure and save the original fitting on your gas tank as they are difficult to find, I believe.

Here's some other parts identification and location info. Notice the prices in the second column from the left. I put a couple of drops of oil on the fittings so as not to gall the threads and to get a tighter fit. Click on photo to enlarge.

I sent you a PM. Yes, too was afraid of stripping that fitting, but I know you will have success. Fordbarners can do anything (well almost). After all, you have a FORD, you're in the Barn, so you are "good to go."

I have replaced more of these lines than I can recall. I have never had a problem with the fitting at the tank. The fitting was brass, the tank boss, cast. That combination of metals would not normally seize.
Carpenter sells a good kit for this that includes all the proper fittings as well as the correct copper coated steel line. The kit is rather reasonable in price.
Originally the line left the tank and was clamped atop the rear cross member, From there it traveled along the left frame rail to the front where upon it would turn "up" and be routed on the cowl.
Obviously a continuous piece of line is better than multiple pieces. Anytime there is a fitting, there is introduced a chance of fluid and / or vacuum leakage.
Along the frame the line was clamped in three places. There is one clamp on the cowl.

Single wall steel tubing easy to bend and painted for rust proofing. I got it at local Advance Auto Parts for $20. Use of copper line is a big controversy due to the possibility of work hardening with vibration. It attaches at the tank with a compression ferrule and nut

I did not recommend copper tubing .... never would.
I recommended copper plated steel tubing, one continuous length.
The place I recommended sells the tubing with the proper fittings.
One additional note: Ford soldered the ferrules on the line for a reason. that is, to avoid any possible vacuum leaks at those points.

Another option is copper/nickle tubing, it will look like the original copper plated steel tubing but won't ever rust on the inside or outside ---one source is- http://www.fedhillusa.com/ , in my area the local hydraulic hose maker also has it in stock because we are near the ocean and it is good on boats, costs less that stainless and is easy to work with.

The steel "poly armor" stuff has been rusting out on 10 year old cars here, the brake pipeconsumption of the modern car shop I work at has gone from 25 feet a year to 25 feet a week, it's not much of an issue in our old cars, but on daily drivers modern cars I am seeing a lot of rusty pipes
