Default 51 ford rearend question.

Have a 51 ford with stock motor-rochester 4-jet and msd ign-linked to a t-5 trans. First gear is a stump puller. rearend is 4;10 I believe the rear without od is 3;73, and the a/t isa 3;31. Could i replace my 4;10 third member with 3;31 third member? And would this help?

I'd use the 3:73, I think the 3:31 would be too high. Back in the '50's, my brother had a '55 Ford with a six cyl and the rear went bad and he put in a rear from an automatic and it would hardly start out, especially on a hill. He changed it to another ratio.

Your rear tire size (compared to stock size) will play a role in final gearing also.

But, I would think in high gear with 3:31 you might be a little under powered on hills etc.

Just my opinion.

I agree, 3:31 would be too high. Also hard on the clutch.

With a T5 you should easily be able to run a 3.31 but depending on which gear set the T5 has in it 1st still may seem like a stump puller.

51 Ford Cars with Ford-O-Matic used 3:31 & 3:54 as a option.
