Gasket between carb and intake

Am I the only one to use a cork gasket between the carb and intake manifold and having trouble. Twice I have used the cork gaskets that came in the gasket sets and found them to loosen up after a couple hundred miles and to find that the inter circle of the gasket has been eaten away almost to the outer edge of the gasket. Is the gas vapers eating the cork away or maybe dissolving the binder in the cork? I have got to make a new gasket from something else besides cork to work on my A's.

I always use a paper gasket there. Never saw a cork one for that application.

Good Morning...You might find that a copper gasket in that location is a good idea. I've used the same one for a long time and taken the carburetor off and on a good few times. Ernie in Arizona

Note...The Bratton's number for the copper gasket is 13750. Their thick paper gasket is 13740. Most other suppliers must have the same...Ernie in Arizona

Never seen a cork one either?! Paper or copper!

I've been changing those carbs for literally 60 years & never seen a cork gasket there.
A collector's item? One-Of-One?

May be using the one they sometimes supply for lower water neck! But I have never seen those either!

You are probably right, I used the ones that came in the last two gasket sets that was for the water neck. They must have sent two for the water necks because I put new gaskets on the water necks at the same time on both engines. I have always used paper gaskets on the carb but I guess I am getting older and more forgetful. I am going for a copper.

To prevent vapor lock, some people will put a plastic spacer between the intake manifold and the carburetor.

Cork is a poor choice for sealing fluids in my opinion, because cork is porous and usually thick. Thick multi-layer gaskets cause cracking of the parts they seal because these gaskets compress under the influence of fastener tightening torque. This causes bending moments in the mating parts. Perhaps the most infamous case is the cracking of the tabs on the water inlet casting. Thin paper gaskets are superior, and make many of them out of brown paper bags 0.030" thick.

The ethanol in the gas tends to deteriorate some cork gaskets!!!
