Damaged White Wall
There is a chunk on my tire taken out of the white wall. Is the white wall structural are just cosmetic?

Re: Damaged White Wall
Most modern whitewalls are just a thin coating, depends on how deep the gouge is, can you post a picture?

Re: Damaged White Wall
A tire shop can give you the correct answer.

Re: Damaged White Wall
It's normally just cosmetic. I have blackwall firestones and I can see where the whitewall would go if they were whitewalls.

Re: Damaged White Wall
i'd only be concerned if cords are cut - if it's just the white layer and no frayed cords should be good to go. If not swap it out to spare duty.

One of the local shops did not have that problem. |

Re: Damaged White Wall
Yep; the vehicle was over 10 years old. Their tires are somewhat round and a little cheaper than elsewhere. I'm sure all retailers have similar liability/insurance issues. Bottom line is that if you bring a tire with noticeable cosmetic damage into any major retailer, there is a good chance they are going to put their sales quota ahead of your pocketbook.

Re: Damaged White Wall
The tire store I use will give an honest opinion, I think others would also. I can understand why they might not want to sell products not suited to your vehicle though.

Tubman, I certainly hope their tires were “somewhat round.”

Re: Damaged White Wall
Actually, they were name brand tires, no better or no worse than anywhere else.
(I was trying to keep the thread somewhat light hearted.) |
