47 ambulance

I have a 1947 panel delivery ambulance by "Shop of Siebert". it was advertised as a 47, but the Seibert tag on the divider wall says "delivery date 1942". Where do I find the VIN or serial number to positively identify this vehicle? How do I determine weather this is a one ton or 1/2 ton? do I count the leaf springs? it has 16" wheels if that means anything. Pardon my ignorance, this is the oldest ford i have owned, only using the body, but would be nice to know what i have. Thanks in advance, Mark

Search this site for serial # info, frames thru 1948 should be the same.

One ton, 5 large lugnuts that take an 1 1/8" socket, 122" wheelbase. 9' behind the seats.

Half ton, 5 normal looking lugnuts that take a 13/16" socket, 114" wheelbase. Around 7' behind the seats.

Based on this info, I have a half ton. Normal 13/16 lugs, 114 inch wheelbase + the Seibert ambulance strech of 36 = the 150 inch wheelbase that I have.

First half of the mystery solved! Tonight, I'll find the serial # and get the correct year.

My limited experience is only the front serial number survives as it has a change to be covered in oil and grease and not dirt and mud like the rear ones.

Thanks for the info. While the floors are toast in this truck, the front is my best hope until I get it tore down, that may be a while. Shop bays are tied up with customer projects till spring.

Well, the frame is too rusty, even near the engine, to read or find the serial number. But upon closer inspection of the Siebert build tag it does say "delivery date 1947" so I will assume ther is no mystery here at all! Thanks for all the help though.
