Nothing wrong with 4drs,and a 4dr that runs and drives beats the hell out of a convertible in parts.

Sorry for getting a little off topic here but most of my information is on Mercury. Maybe Ford was a little lighter and faster? But Mercury had the bigger engine.

I wonder if those tests were ran with the car in drive,or if they started out in low gear and then shifted to drive?

Lots of people don't seem to know the FOM was actually a 3 speed auto that started out in second gear.

Although we are both '51 Ford aficionados, I think I'm starting to remember why we ended up not getting along very well the last time you were here.

As far as acceleration goes, when I got out of the army in 1961my first car was a 1951 Ford 6 cylinder business coupe, standard shift. I don't know what the rear end ratio was, but I never got beat racing stop light to stop light.

A friend of mine had a 1953 Ford 2-door sedan with the 215 OHV 6-cylinder and it surprised a lot of folks off the line. The V8 could defeat it in the 1/4 mile but it had to catch it first. It had the standard 3-speed trans.

The Ford-O-Matics didn't have a modern type torque converter so it didn't help much with acceleration. The tall gearing would get them right on down the road though once it got going good. A person could use Low gear if you floored it off the line. Otherwise a person would have to manually shift it to Low or it would start off in slug a bug 2nd gear.

The data plate in that photo of the FOM looks like most of them do after 70 years. The only thing readable is the serial number. The suffix is what designated the application and then there were several transmission plants that built them to include Ford and Borg Warner but a person can't tell since the code isn't legible. That transmission could have been made in 1953 for all we can tell.

Looks like LAZARUSLONG was BANNED ???????????? Wonder why? Doesn't look like he expressed himself in any bad way than some of the others that responded? We all have different thoughts about things and ways of dealing with them and in his case seems he is also dealing with health issues. Very surprised at this. I think this is a wonderful group and can't see that he throwed any more dirt than other did. Ok I expressed my opinion

Saw what may have been the reason, before his post was removed.
He directed the acronym (ESAD) at a poster who had given his view/opinion of someone else's post..

Yes, I believe the Motor Trend test used Low and Drive for maximum acceleration in their acceleration test.
