Broken diapragm in the fuel pump ?
Fix the issue...putting in a rope seal ainīt a solution to gas in the oil.

Need to not run the engine in this condition!!! The fuel will dilute the oil and destroy the bearings. This is not an engine problem, it is a fuel pump problem. He needs to replace the fuel pump or by-pass it and use an electric pump. The diaphragm inside the pump is leaking.

My portable generator had the same problem and it was a stuck carburetor float. A quick blast with cleaner freed everything up to correct the condition.

Now - that's a gravity fed tank so I bet the previously mentioned electric fuel pump may be a factor, too.

If its this bad and you try to run it the chances are if there is enough fuel in the combustion chamber it could hydraulic and do big damage or have a big boom in the sump.
You need to fix the source not bandaid the leak.

As others have said, fix the fuel pump. The 40 engine doesn't have a rear seal.

As others have said this condition might ruin your engine if run!! Drain the oil , don't replace until you figure out the problem which can be stuck float in carb or fuel pump ! Good luck with it !

I kind of doubt rather seriously that a STUCK FLOAT, allowing fuel to be pumped directly into the intake manifold....and sucked into the cylinders while the engine is TRYING to remain running with that much raw fuel in the cylinders, would have allowed the engine to continue operating (RUNNING) long enough to pump an extra couple of gallons (or more) of gasoline into the crankcase. We're most-likely gonna find a ruptured fuel pump diaphragm, which feeds gasoline directly into the valve chamber / crankcase. DD

I second this analysis.

I had a similar problem with my '41 although it didn't fill the engine with gas. It was the fuel pump diaphragm. Ethanol destroyed it. I did what JSeery suggests and everything has been fine for 5 years. And DON'T run the engine until repaired!

Possible thread hijack -

I plan to use non-ethyl gas currently available locally at $4/gallon ($80/fillup). However, long trips don't afford that luxury ... can anything be done to continue using a vintage pump with the assurance it will not let one down on the road?

Reasking, are pumps available which can withstand the chemical rigors of corn gas? Alternatively, using an electric pump, are plates available to block off the hole of the original mechanical pump.

But then, my car had an electrical pump installed back before alcohol was available so the diaphragm in my electrical pump is probably vulnerable as the mechanical pump. I just wouldn't leak into the crankcase. Thoughts?

Get a fuel pump diaphragm from Ken CT or talk to Charlie NY. Rebuild your AC brand mechanical fuel pump, scrap the electric one and use the gas that is available. Be happy.
(Also get a fuel hose from Bob Sherman(sp?)
Just an opinion. That is what I run in my 32 and 40.

Great advice here Floyd. I've been doing just that on my 40 and my fuel pump has been in service for several years without a problem.

The diaphragm I have from Charlie NY is nuclear proof, absolutely the best available.
Give him a shout he's on here under that name.
Martin.

Aside from the fact that you will probably toast your bearings, but if your rings are a bit sloppy, with an oil pan full of gas, couldn't you cause an explosion if you ignite the gas fumes?
