Sounds like you may have a leak. Pull the drums and check.

Did you check the shoes? The short shoe goes in the front on 49 and later cars.

Don't drive it until you remove both front drums and see what is happening. Something is clearly not right, maybe a spring broke. If that is the case, replace them all as they are over 60 years old.

Drum brake technology has lost a lot in later years. I can't find a place to have drums turned where they even know about limits and keeping them both the same size, let alone arcing the shoes to fit turned drums. And this includes a good friend who is one of the best Dodge Cummins techs around.
That being said, if a drum was put on that was turned way beyond limits, the adjuster could screw all the way apart and crap fall down to make scraping noise. Back when I was in the garage business I actually had Fords come into my shop this has happened to, with symptoms very much like yours..

It could be a problem with the left side not working properly and the right side ok, thereby pulling to the right.

A squeak usually means metal to metal. I would assume the left side is the problem.

Look for wet shoes. You had a low pedal which indicates a leak. Brake fluid causes them to swell and bind.
