Re: Looking for a running engine
$600 for a Model A engine core sounds pretty high. What is the real value of one?

Re: Looking for a running engine
Some of the engine builders are saying that only 1 block out of 8 are acceptable for a re-build.

A quick look at the internet for engine stitching will reveal repairs to blocks of all kinds with large chunks that have been broken away and replaced. valve seats cracks repaired. With a guess of 6-8 hours of work to locate, repair and test the block, how much would would be added to the repair at going shop rates? Cannot be repaired, or cannot be repaired at a price we would be willing to pay?

Re: Looking for a running engine
Numbers matching is a non issue... Most builders will even stamp the numbers you want for a small fee

Re: Looking for a running engine
There is a cutaway single cylinder Model A engine that runs on a stand. My point is, what are you going to do with it? The engine can run with one cylinder but would be worthless in a car that is expected to drive on the road.

Re: Looking for a running engine
Clearly if Tod and or others can get their processes down there is surely a market for new model A blocks.

Re: Looking for a running engine
The engine on my stand right now was a decent running engine with a slight miss. Needs a valve job to cure the miss. Before I put it back together I will have the lower end balanced and put on a lightened flywheel, put in larger intake valves, B cam along with adjusting the shims. Since it is likely I will be running it several years until I can afford to rebuild the original engine the way I want it this one will have to do for now. Rod

Re: Looking for a running engine
I saw a demo video of a crack being "stitched" across a valve seat. They then ground the seat, WITHOUT installing a seat insert & assembled it!! Will it last? I DON'T THINK SO.
I feel that "STITCH" repairs are WAY OVER RATED. Bill W.

Re: Looking for a running engine
I did 2 stitch repairs 6 years ago for friends. Six years later no problems with either. Neither crack extended to the cyls. Saved 2 engines with good bearings etc. from going to the scrap. I am not sure I would have tried either if the cracks went to the cyls. Rod

Re: Looking for a running engine
I know its off the orig post but ive seen several engines with fairly recent rebuild that had to be scrapped. crack repair done, pressure check ok, after a few hot/cold cycles start to get water in the oil. Competent engine rebuilders know that so how can they warranty that? better to toss it than roll the dice.

Re: Looking for a running engine
Until new affordable blocks are being cast, I wouldn't be too quick to scrap an engine. Lots of good repairs can be done by good shops.

Re: Looking for a running engine
Stitching, sleeves, valve seats esp if it a number matching block.
