head liner delema 1931 coupe
I have just finished the roof on my 31 coupe but am having trouble figuring out how to install a head liner. Can anyone help? thanks Harv.

Re: head liner delema 1931 coupe
First of all, on a coupe, what are the edges of the fabric supposed to be tacked to?
Is there wood, or some other tacking material in the body? I can give lots of advice for a S/W sedan headliner, but I don't know if it would apply to the coupe. Doug

Doug, the coupe has the same type wood frame as all the Model A's. It has strainers on the sides and a header in the front with a wood frame across the rear. It also has ribs to attach the liner to, just not as many.

So are you saying that the headliner just tacks to the roof bows. What is used as backing to keep the material tight? I wondered if Masonite might work. Harv

if its like my tudor the headliner should have seams sewn in on the backside which gets tacked to the bows....here is a pic showing the white tack strips

Re: head liner delema 1931 coupe
Thanks Brent, I don't have a commercial headliner so I thought I would attempt to fabricate one. That's my problem. If it only tacks to the upper structure I should be able to make a good looking one. Thanks to all who responded. Harv.

Do you have a game plan on how you are going to sew it, --or how they were originally sewed??

No game plan at all Brent, I'm hoping someone on this site can supply some insight. There must be others out there who got creative with installing a headliner. Harv.

I, personally, would let a local upholstery shop FABRICATE/INSTALL It's a "cup of TEA" for them. It's NOT too expensive.
