Model A Motors - Scrap or Part?
Before I scrap these blocks - should I remove anything that may be of value? All 1930 motors. One is free. Thanks.

It actually takes quite a bit before a Model A block is so bad that it cannot be repaired.

Re: Model A Motors - Scrap or Part?
If they are rebuild able blocks keep them or give them to someone who needs them
as said almost anything can be repaired and until we have new blocks available even 1/2 decent blocks are get harder to come by |

I once paid $10 for an engine that looked like it was pulled from the river bottom. I should have left it, because it was total junk, and the only parts I could save was the front and side cover and the bolts for them. The cylinders were all badly busted and had been welded and sleeved many years ago. The inside of the block had a couple quarts of sand, and every single moving part was rusted beyond all hope of removing them. I used a plasma cutter to cut the side of the block to use as a jig to make engine stand mounts, and the rest went to the junk yard. |

I hope I am misunderstanding your post, and in fact found someone who could use the blocks.

Re: Model A Motors - Scrap or Part?
A donation to a school or other facility where they could be used to teach young people how to work on engines without fear of doing damage would be a good thing. A donation to a scrap yard would be a missed opportunity to further knowledge and the hobby.

Re: Model A Motors - Scrap or Part?
Yes Ray,
I understand. I donated a complete 1939 GMC pickup to the local high school. I went by about six months later to see if they made any progress and how things were going. Turns out to find out the instructor sold the truck to as personal friend and pocketed the money before he left. Some people.... DMac |

So did you donate to the scrapper or a needy recipient? Wayne

Re: Model A Motors - Scrap or Part?
Truck is gone It was a GMC, not a Ford. Very bad experience. Also the tweakers poking around selling meat out of the back of a pickup as cover. Three days later shielded locks could not be cut so they unbolted the side of the metal building to gain access to my garage and managed to get the door open high enough to tale all the tools but thankfully not the trailer and the 36 Pickup. The other trailer in the drive - now that got taken outright. So now - two gates. Cameras, more shielded locks and a big dog.
Anyway. Still have one free turning motor and I am giving it to a kid (23) at the airport. He's going to put it in his Sopworth Camel replica project. |
