Default Whats the secret?

Ok I give up. What's the secret to putting the snap ring back on the input shaft on the front of the transmission (the one in front of the front bearing ) ? First of all that has to be the worst design for a snap ring ever but there has to be a secret. Is there a new style that will fit or a special tool of what? I spent an hour messing with it and once I got it on its spread out to far permanently due to my prying on it so now I've got to get another and start over so if a new style will fit maybe I'll try that. Help.......
