Whats the secret? Ok I give up. What's the secret to putting the snap ring back on the input shaft on the front of the transmission (the one in front of the front bearing ) ? First of all that has to be the worst design for a snap ring ever but there has to be a secret. Is there a new style that will fit or a special tool of what? I spent an hour messing with it and once I got it on its spread out to far permanently due to my prying on it so now I've got to get another and start over so if a new style will fit maybe I'll try that. Help.......

Re: Whats the secret? Mac Van Pelt suggests grinding the side that slopes up flat to give your spreaders more to grab on to.
I agree though, horrible design. I was looking at an old dodge tranny the other day, and it had the same design on the snap rings. |
Re: Whats the secret? Once I get those slanted end type snap rings off, I drill holes in both ends so that standard snap ring pliers can be used to reinstall and possibly remove them again. Very simple solution.

Re: Whats the secret? You need a pair of these, and they're hard to find. You pretty much have to order them or buy them from a parts truck like Mac Tools, etc. They're called "horshoe snap ring pliers".

I have yet to walk into an auto parts store and find a pair on the shelf. |
Re: Whats the secret? Now that I trashed mine can you get these snap rings local or do I have to order another one and wait again?

Re: Whats the secret? put it in a vice and squeeze it back in shape

Re: Whats the secret? Give Mac VanPelt a call. He knows the problem and sells you one you can put on and take off without damaging the shaft or yourself. The new ones bevel where snap ring pliers will get to them.

Re: Whats the secret? I just talked to Mac and he's sending me one NO CHARGE! I just about fell over.

Re: Whats the secret? If memory serves, I bought a pr. of those snap ring pliers at Shears and Roeboats not that long ago and they work great.
