Re: Hot Start 1950 Merc
Agree. Not applicable to this thread regarding a '50. Still felt the need to reply for those with a resistor, who may incorrectly think the resistor needs to cool down before they can get a good...

Re: Hot Start 1950 Merc
Have to disagree with that.
The resistor's voltage drop change cold-to-hot is only a few tenths of a volt. Not enough to make a difference.
The resistor gets so hot you will burn your fingers. Any...

Re: What weight oil should I use - Brand?
I’ve heard it said you are OK as long as you have some pressure. Your engine doesn’t need a lot of oil pressure, just enough pressure to get oil distributed everywhere.

Re: Condenser
And don’t all aircraft have two independent ignition systems? If any component on one system fails, the second system keeps the engine running?

Aren’t those the light bulb contacts? Don’t look like bullet connectors. Wire looks correct for Ford taillight.

Re: engine stumbles under load
Glennpm
All of that makes perfect sense. Good logic there. If that coil is putting out good spark at lower amps, that’s all you need.

Re: engine stumbles under load
I think you meant to say target 4 amps. You get to that by having about 3 ohm total resistance in the primary circuit.
I = V/R
4 amp=12 Volt / 3 ohm

Re: Overheating 1946 V8
That’s good news. Sounds like problem was with a stuck thermostat.
But in my opinion you should use thermostats so engine will come up to temperature quickly. Then when stats open you get just about...

Re: Bucket seats for 50 Ford
Just about every car made in the last fifty years has bucket seats. One thing that makes our old cars unique is their bench seats. Why remove that?
Ok, I'll shut up now. Each to his own opinion.

Could there have been enough vacuum that air being sucked in through the weep hole is what stopped the flow?

Re: Engine dies
Isn’t the carb’s air vent opening above the choke plate, so a closed choke shouldn’t do much to stop evaporation? Or am I missing something else?

Re: Ballast resistor for 12V coil
Yes. And that normal variation in the applied voltage has a significant effect on everything downstream. Bigger effect than a few tenths of an ohm in the resistor. But everything downstream is used...

Re: Engine dies
As already said, most engines want partial choke until warmed up. Don't push all the way in until after driving a bit.
Hard-to-start after sitting a week is normal. Gasoline evaporates out of...

Re: Ballast resistor for 12V coil
You will be fine. Theoretically your current will be 4.3 amps instead of 4. Close enough. None of this stuff is exact to the theoretical anyway.

Re: 38 Standard Tudor rear side window removal
Someone just asked about installing Tudor rear windows, and I posted steps I took to do that on a '37. Removal is pretty much the reverse order. And I think your '38 is the same. See post #8 in this...

Re: dirty oil. Why so quick
Guys, you are responding to a thread from six years ago.
My first clue was seeing a post from G.M. He passed away a few years ago.
