Default rockers covers

Repainting engine rockers covers are red is this the right or should they be blue? Did they build only 312 Mercurys in 1956

I believe that is correct. But it's been a little while since then and the engine in the car now could easily have been changed.

Lots of 50's y-blocks are red/orange, esp in the 'Ford' cars. Mercury had their own color schemes for several years, gold and yellow are also possibilities. Do a google search for "images 1956 Mercury" and see what you find, until others here chime in.

I don't recall blue being used on Ford company engines until sometime in the mid 60's.

The red that most folks repaint their y-block engines is usually too red to be 'correct', if you're going for originality.
Here's an photo that attempts to show the difference between 'red' and the engine 'red/orange', BUT both of those colors in the photo are slightly darker than original.

I had a wrecked 56 Merc four door sedan to part out in 58. It was a cheapy car. Engine was metallic gold with pale orange rocker covers, not as orange as chevy engine color.

I went to an auto parts store that had this brand of engine paint, since they were right down the road and seemed to have a decent selection of red & red/orange colors to choose from.

I found the red & red/orange color chips on the webpage weren't that close to the colors on the actual paint cans. So I took a part that still had some good color to it and matched it to the paint can cap color I liked.

Somewhere in those years, Mercury had a light green/dark green combo also. 58 FE engines were black with light green sheet metal, (332) and black with light blue sheet metal (352) You know there were some odd combos thru the 50s and 60s, but no one seems to have paid attention, including me. Early Windsors up to 66 had some really interesting colors as well. Not only were the engine sizes different colors, but Mercs were different colors, as were the Canadian and export models as well. Then to really add to the confusion, trucks were different also. Research should be done on this subject, as there is almost no info on these color combos.

Here's mine. '56 Mercury 312 colors, in my '56 Ford. Intake is a '57 so it's red.

How it looked before rebuild & paint. Perhaps not an exact match but very close:

The engine pictured here appears to be from a '55 Mercury (292) based on the yellow color and the fact that is had core plugs if the front and back of the heads

Yes it is a '55 292. Bored out a bit & used different heads (ECZs) when rebuilt At the time I had it done I found a source that said these were '56 312 colors. Seems to be a lot of confusion over which color combo is correct. I saw some that were yellow, green, red. . . I liked this color best so it's what I used. Sal - that is the engine with the carb & intake you got from me a year or so ago.

In 56, there were two different heads, both C's I believe. The early ones had the core plugs in them, the later ones did not.

It's either Cadillac or Olds, can't remember which. But is an original, not a repop. Reworked from oil bath to now takes a paper filter element.

raceron1120 does it clear the distributor or did you have to modify it, Speedway has them in std or 7/8 size.

It clears the distributor. The back of the air cleaner is very close to the firewall. Doesn't touch it, but close.
