Brake lining
What has anyone done about relining 34 riveted brake shoes.
Best solution I have found so far is P&O Brakes in Las Vegas Ne. They will do your shoes or exchange yours. They use woven or bonded ,your choice. Turn around is a couple of days & price is $22.50 per SHOE +shipping |

Re: Brake lining
Be careful sometimes you get what you pay for? are they pre arced ? what material are they using ? some of the lining mat is so hard they glaze right over. do a little homework before you buy. ( been there done that)

Re: Brake lining
Thank you for the heads up. It is pretty had to pre arc without the drums. I think there is a fellow selling raybestos woven lining that I am going to get in touch with & if all goes as planned I will be doing my own. Been a long time but I have done a lot of brake jobs in my past. Mechanic in the US army from 54 to 56 & a few years in a Richfield station & my own fleet so they won't be gettin no virgin

Re: Brake lining
So what is the best way to reline the brake shoes on a '34 Ford? Mine need it badly and I'm not sure how to go about it.

Re: Brake lining
The car guys here all use Dick Larsen. His business is Metal Frictions Inc which seems like a strange name but his main business is putting linings on brake shoes for industrial winches like on fishing boats. He can turn drums, reline shoes, arc them to the drums and is reasonable price wise. First class work. Did my 40 woodie brakes.
Give him a call 206 364-8560 Metal Frictions Inc. 12551 26th Ave NE Seattle, WA 98125 |

Re: Brake lining
There was a guy that came into the shop looking for work last night, when i asked him what he could do one of the things was relining brake shoes, he would do them for 5$ each, he even has the tools--a big nail to set the rivits.---for arcing --rub on concrete
For old chyrsler, and Mercedes shoes the shop has used-- http://allfrictions.com/ --i send the drum diameter with the shoes, they come back arced to that diameter, about 22$ per shoe ---if you think about all the process 22$ isn't that bad for doing custom lining, it's not like they are doing 100 sets, just your shoes, remove old lining, clean shoe, straighten minor damage, install new lining, arc shoe to size |

Re: Brake lining
About 20 years ago I bought a NOS brake shoe riveter. It clamps in the vise and is about the size of a mans fist. I bought the linings and rivets from Joblot in New York and did them myself. Still on my 32 B 5 window and still stops fine. Did several other cars as well with great results.

Re: Brake lining
I redid the brakes on my 33 last summer, using woven shoes from Macs. The pedal is is real firm, car stops straight - but it doesn't really seem to stop much better than with the old hard shoes that were in there.
It took quite a while to get the shoes from Macs, they didn't have any in stock and had to send mine out to get relined. Not so sure I would do that again. I didn't arc them, maybe that would have helped a little but I think the material they used wasn't the best. |

Re: Brake lining
I do mine in shop. I have an old Breeze riveter and shoe grinder. Getting the correct linings is the tricky part.

Re: Brake lining
I think I an going to buy the lining from McMaster Carr along
with the rivets & do mine myself. They seem to have the good stuff. McMaster Carr part # 6224k344 is $5.83 per ft. They have all different lengths & or rolls. My linings are 16"X13/4"each so will have a bit left over but it always comes in handy. Seen a few handy riveters on E-gay. |
