First traffic signal (sort of off topic)
This is a little earlier than the Model A (taken in 1915), but here is the first traffic signal in Portland, Oregon.

Re: First traffic signal (sort of off topic)
I love how the typical thread police rated this 1 star cause it's not model A. I have a real good idea who it is too.

Re: First traffic signal (sort of off topic)
Well, to be defensive, it is auto history related, and I think there are a few of us that find that kind of thing interesting, though not actually about the Model A. I see it as similar to topics like license plate toppers, downdraft carbs, after market accessories, dogs in cars, old pix of gas stations, train stations, and other period buildings (which I really enjoy), and such as that.
But strictly speaking, it is off topic, as I mentioned in the thread title, which I think warns people away if this type of thing troubles them, and for those folks they can just not click on it. Ultimately if it is way incorrect I expect Ryan will hear about it and take appropriate measures.

Re: First traffic signal (sort of off topic)
Looks like a typical city project to me. One cop to turn the sign, and two supervisors.
(BTW I too enjoy history of the era even if it sin't exactly A related.)

In Portland at the time, a typical signal-controlled intersection had only a blinking yellow light. It was the driver's responsibility to determine who had the right-of-way and, by means of brakes and hand signals, coordinate the stops and turns with other drivers. The videos are very interesting to watch as driving behavior in the 1930's was much different than that nowadays, with rolling stops, hairball left turns, and near-misses a frequent occurence. But for newer tri-color traffic signals, many of the intesections depicted looked the same when I lived in Portland in the 1950's I personally like seeing how these cars were driven back in the day. |
