Default Steam Train Photo Op

I just learned that the 261 left Minneapolis this morning at 9 AM for a trip to Duluth and a photo shoot. This is the first run in 4 years after the engine was layed up for maintenence. The 261 will return tomorrow, leaving Duluth about 2 and arriving in MPLS about 5 PM, so anyone in the area can park at one of the many crossings for a good picture of their Model A with the steam engine racing by.

I wish I was there to see that roll by. Tom, why do you suppose the cow-catcher is shrouded with the big sheet metal covering? It looks like a retro-fit from the JC Whitney of steam train parts. Maybe a war-time add-on for a streamliner look?

Yes, the 261 was built in the war years and came with the smooth cow catcher. It sure is ugly compared to the more common vertical bar type. I suppose at speed the smooth metal might help push the air up and make the smoke rise better, although that's what the "elephant ears" are for on steam engines.

Hope some Barners will get pictures of the 261 (and their A's) and post 'em on here. The train excursion likes as though it'd be good fun, too.

That is a strange looking engine. Was it used for logging?

Craig, those are some beautiful pictures.
Wish my aunt was still alive to do oil paintings of some of them. The country shots with the Model A would be a great painting.

A note to you steam lovers. The Tennessee Railroad Musium in Chattanooga runs an old Baldwin on 1 hour excursions and sells Cab passes to ride in the locamotive with the engineer and fireman. It was one of the coolest things I have done. If I remember it was something like 17 dollars. Worth every penny.

If any of you Barners are close enough to make it to Choo Choo town I highly recommend it.

In a few hours I'll go across the river and wait by the crossing for it to go by. Too bad that they have to haul along a diesel engine behind the tender. At least they always did on the past few runs I watched.

Thanks Tom, I'm sure a nice painting of some of those would be nice. My favorite is the "Southern 2-8-0".

I blew it. The 261 was about an hour late and sped by pretty quickly. I didn't give the camera time to focus and I snapped the picture a fraction of a second too soon. There was no time to take a second picture.

While I was waiting for the 261 to go by, a freight train sped by 40 minutes earlier and the vacuum pulled my motorbike over onto the granite roadbed.

Sorry Tom, it wasn't vacuum. It was vibration due to poor condition of the roadbed.

The weight was on the kickstand and the vacuum pulled the bike over on the other side. The same way a person walking too close to the tracks gets pulled into the train. The roadbed is excellent and only a year old.
