Default Sycronizing a 38 trans

I picked up what looks to be a 38 passenger transmission... can it be sycronized by swapping parts out

It is already synchronized.

The '39 type syncros that everyone wants are only slightly better than the '38 depending on the intended use. Racing or street?

If you mean synchronizing first gear, no, so far it hasn't been done.

It would need a 91A or later high range shift fork if a person changes the necessary parts to use the later synchronizer assembly. The cluster interchanges for sure but you would need Mack VanPelt's transmission book if you start looking for individual parts.

This is a little off topic but is there much difference between 38 and 36 synchronized? I have a 36 and I have to shift pretty slowly to avoid grinding, wondered if it's worth upgrading.

Although you wouldn’t expect to be able to speed shift the early type synchronized transmission, you shouldn’t have to baby it into gear either. Chances are that (assuming your clutch is adjusted correctly) the synchro assembly probably needs replacement.
