Default What year Power Steering will work in 54 Mercury

My friend has a 54 Mercury. no power steering and want to know what years will work in his car. Plus he has no idea were to start looking for the setup. I wonder what years are the same that will work. I am just trying to help a friend.

1953 Mercury PS with a different engine bracket and crank shaft pulley (Flathead vs Y block).

In the long run a Borgeson unit will serve well over the years and run about the same price wise, maybe less by the time a used unit is rebuilt.

Old Redneck, I have attempted to e-mail you and jackrabbit but I don't know if the messages went through. I have a few parts that will be needed for an install. Private message me?

Cool Re: What year Power Steering will work in 54 Mercury

Don't discount electric power steering. You can use your original steering box and no pump/reservoir/hoses or hydraulics under the hood! Only a small electric motor tucks up under the dash. I just adapted one to my '54 Customline. Total cost....under $200!

How about an all-electric in-line unit such as from a Toyota Prius? Junkyard scrounging is one of the oldest hot rodding techniques! There are a lot of different modern cars that use electric steering, but I know the Prius unit is self-contained. It has one ground wire, one hot wire from the battery, and one from the ignition switch.

Wow. Good idea. I never thought of that. My 36 Plymouth has a Mustang II power rack, or I'd try that on it.

How many hours to change over?
Once you get the resistance set, you don't need to hardly ever adjust that, do ya?

If you wanted to stay period-correct and bolt pump to a Y-block, the '55 thru '59 Ford and mercury factory power assist system will mostly bolt-on. The only things you might need to change is the idler arm and bracket and the sector arm, which would need to come from a '54 Ford or Mercury.
Your steering gearbox and steering column do not need to be changed to convert to power assist. It is completely divorced from the steering gearbox. That is not true of the Lincoln power steering system of that era.
Every once in a while, you find one or a partial setup on e-bay. Last year, I sold a completely restored/rebuilt setup I had in my garage for many years.
