Default just biought a 1956 Mercury Montclair

I have just purchased a 1956 Mercury Montclair. I have the info from the plate inside the drivers door, but cannot find anyplace to help me decode it. I have read several articles online with lots of links, but I am still stumped.

Looking forward to learning what I am doing.

Thanks in advance

The only correct info source I know of will be found in the MERCURY PARTS BOOK for the period. If the info is ONLINE, I haven't come across it.

Here is a cheap and easy way out-

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1956-1957-1....c100005.m1851

You should also consider sourcing a '56 MERC SHOP MANUAL also.

This is an excellent book on decoding Body Numbers on Fifties cars. They also have similar books on cars of the Sixties plus others. Try and track down a copy, you won't be disappointed.

And I have figured out that someone repainted the car at some point and what is white should be green and what is green should be white...UGH!!!

This is the Colour Chart for the 1956 Mercury. It is not the best, but at least it is a reference point. Regards Mercman <><

I don't have anything in print from Ford but have seen 55 and 56 Fords with same colors reversed. Like turquoise and white, with white in the middle and turquoise on top and bottom then reversed to turquoise in middle and white top and bottom. Same thing on 58's. Maybe special request from back when you could actually order a car to you specs. Salesman fact books and ordering guide have way more information than showroom literature.

iowasoxfan,

Why don't you post the actual info from the data plate on the car. There are a lot of people here that might be able to decipher certain things (body code, paint codes ect.), if you can't find it.

On the data plate from the drivers door does it show exterior 'color codes'?
- IF - Merc used a similar format to Ford there would be more than one color shown on the data plate.
The first color would be the main body color, the next color listed would be a secondary body color and sometimes a third accent color.

Example photo below...
X = body color code letter
E = hardtop color code letter
.

Photos of the car are way overdue.
I think anyone asking for help on a car they just bought owes us photos.

The site won't take big pictures, try downsizing them.

Yup, that's been my experience too w/this site. Try downsizing, also, post only one picture at a time, rather than multiple ones.

Or just type the data plate numbers and codes, so others can help.
