Default Kind of a 6 Volt coil question/observation

Was going through a junk box, dug out several ignition coils, and did some primary resistance checks. Two were Delco and one, an original 6 volt ford Coil off a model A. The resistance measurement of the Delco's was 1.35 ohms (externally marked as 12 volt coils) the Ford Coil measures 1.4 ohms, and is as mentioned, off a Model A Ford. It would appear These coils, if Used on a 6 volt system, as is, they would draw 4.2 to 4.4 amps static drain. What I have read off the web is 1.2 to 1.4 ohms is typical for a 6 volt coil. All I can determine is early Delco coils were actually 6 Volt and used the external resistor to adjust current to only allow 6 volts at the coil! Anyone else have any thoughts? Something I am missing?

Your thinking is totally correct.

My 1957 Corvette (long gone, alas) had a coil resistor. I only know this because it went bad and I had to replace it. Wire wound, mounted on a ceramic block.

Would be good for a 12V conversion.
