Model A with T mods or Model T with A mods ??
Hello All !
This is actually "part 2" of of a thread I started last 8 Sep 2019 p.2 titled " Information on transition 1927 model A ". The last post was 9 Oct. I finally got some time and replied with a bunch of more pics last 16 Nov (based on replies and other info i got, it is absolutely NOT a "Transition" model). Unfortunately no replies yet, so I decided to make a new thread, and of course a new subject title. I hope I get replies now. Pics next. Please pardon some of the unclear pics due to poor lighting and a poor cellphone camera. Last edited by patrickt; 11-18-2019 at 08:02 AM. |

Re: Model A with T mods or Model T with A mods ??
Can't say for sure, but this does look like someone tried to "upgrade" a Model T into a Model A. There are some later parts (tail-light, wheels) as well as a good copy of a Model A radiator cover (widow's peak done from a picture?)
I might say "FrankenCar" but then that would run down what obviously was someone's skill and mechanical ability outlet for good long time. One imagines a mechanic in an offshore Ford Dealership - who would have good parts sources and the experience and ability to pull something like this off. What does the rear end look like? Just for your info you can add multiple pictures to a single post. Go to the test forum and try it, https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=13.

Re: Model A with T mods or Model T with A mods ??
Joe K - Thanks for your reply. "Frankencar" is probably an accurate description of this car for most Model A or antique car owners. But in this country, where there are likely not more than 5 or so Model A's and only 2 known Model T's, even a "Frankencar" is appreciated. You would have to be pretty well off importing either car over here, since you could easily be paying 3 times what its worth after customs and duties... Reminds me of some 1970's jeep (that I read about) in the early 80's that had a Ferrari 308 engine in it, hence it was called a Jerrari. Although I personally would prefer a relatively original A or T, but that's what we have right now, so...
Charlie Stephens - yes, Thanks, I will give it a try. I will also try to get a shot of the rear end, just a problem of space right now. Anyone else ? |

The chassis looks like Model A from what you can see of it.

It’s a 26-7 Model T body placed on a Model A chassis. The chassis probably wasn’t shortened .

Bob & tmiller6 - Thank you both guys !
I will try to crawl underneath to get shots of the chassis, axles, etc.. I need to gather all the clues so i can determine what it really is. |

Re: Model A with T mods or Model T with A mods ??
An overall view of the car would maybe more revealing. I can not see anything Model T ; the firewall appears to be '28 '29 A plus floor risers in the front footwell.. It could be local made bodywork.
Most of the cars in this area ended up being shipped back to Japan during War, but Fords were certainly sold there new. |

Re: Model A with T mods or Model T with A mods ??
Tudortomnz -
Sorry, can't oblige anyone with a full view of the car, space limitations in garage. Although I just now got some pics from underneath. If by local made bodywork you mean that the entire body was fabricated out of scratch, i wouldn't think so. Absolutely possible to have modified the original body to make things fit, like transplanting an A engine and tranny, etc.. Not saying that's what was done of course, still in the investigative process of identifying this car. I did just now take some pics underneath. I will try to (hopefully ??) post multiple shots in one post. And as I said in a previous post, my apologies for some of the poor pics, bad lighting and a bad cellphone camera. |

Re: Model A with T mods or Model T with A mods ??
Last batch for now (its past dinner time over here). I will add text to each batch of pics tomorrow.
The 16-inch wheels i understand are from some Ford from the middle 1930`s (??). I hope to receive our A engine parts sometime January next year, so in the meantime, i`m thinking of checking out the brakes. Anyone have any idea what brakes are on our car ? In the meantime, i will go check online for brakes/wheels from the 30`s. Patrick |

Re: Model A with T mods or Model T with A mods ??
So just to be crystal clear, your both saying that the pics I sent, show everything underneath to be a 30 or 31 Model A ? And that the 16 - inch wheels conveniently fit the Model A drums ?
bgarrett - So putting a T body on an A chassis was common practice for somebody so inclined ? Was it easy to do ? May I ask you to expound on this ? |

Re: Model A with T mods or Model T with A mods ??
Your wheels look like '35 Ford. Please confirm that they have 16 inch tires. They bolt right on from 1928 to 1935 (with the exception of the early '28 drums). I like to use the '32 four cylinder hubcaps with those wheels.

Re: Model A with T mods or Model T with A mods ??
My scenario: the old model T broke down & was superseded by a newer Model A Ford. The good T body was removed so the chassis could be used as a farm trailer/wagon. Alas two weeks later a garage roof truss, overloaded by too much junk, gave way onto the A. Now since he had a usable chassis and a passable T body, Why not make lemonade of lemons?

Re: Model A with T mods or Model T with A mods ??
This is intriguing. Based on '28 '29 Patrickt, not '30'31.
Looks to have local made bits on it. No problem to your local fabricators, as they have been making up Jeepney'/Jeep replicas for decades. Possible to get a pic of a door or front cowl? Thanks for all the pics. Cheers. |

Re: Model A with T mods or Model T with A mods ??
Hotrodfil - That is a handsome Touring T - A. Thanks for posting. Maybe we can call it a "Ford Model T super" instead ☺.
J Franklin - one lemonade please. But seriously, I get your point. It is in fact sentimental to me, because my dad bought it off his third cousin like decades ago, and it was my everyday car when I was in my thirties. Thanks ! Tudortomnz- May I ask what your basis was for it being based on the 28-29 A, instead of the later one ? I assume you were referring only to the chassis ? You are right about the jeep-ney fabricators, and that's with no real special tools on hand. I did post maybe several pics of doors and latches earlier on in this thread (the one with only a single pic / post, since I just learned how to post 7 pics / post last night. I will get some more of the doors sometime today. And thanks for responding. Everyone - I will try to get one wheel off to check out the drum and open it up, which might be difficult, given its been sitting in an open air garage for about 20 years now in this tropical climate. I like it, it was done well. Give it a good cleaning, oil its joints, and a bit of love and enjoy a fun tour.

Patrickt, The steering gear [RHD non adjust], handbrake, rear bumpers, radiator etc all appear '28 '29, hence my opinion not '30 '31.
Well, if not many Model T's or A's there, you now have both in one car! It deserves to go back on the road, a piece of your local history. Cheers |

I'm going to say 26-27 T body, 28-29 chassis, 28-29 hood, local made fenders, running
boards, aprons and grill shell. 1935 Wheels and sealed beam headlights. I like it. Keep it as it is |

J Franklin & Tudortomnz & Dodge -
Thanks for all the very helpful information, and the final encouraging remarks ! In the end, for me anyway, it's all about the human experience. Everyone - Thanks as well for all the very helpful information! What I've learned from you guys has given me a better appreciation both for the "technical" aspects as well as personal, which are some important reasons for my enjoying the old car hobby. Talk to you all later, take it easy now ! Patrick |

When you remove the rear drums/hubs be sure you use a good puller, one that pulls from the snout of the hub. Without the proper tool you can destroy the axle ($$$). I think the one made by KR Wilson or a reproduction of it is the best although there are a couple of others that look good.
