Default Waltham speedometer question.

My 1931 Ford has a Waltham speedometer that I would like to have gone over or at least cleaned, especially the numbers. Not white on the indicator backgound but yellow. Is Waltham a good enough one to restore or cleanup or was the other makes better like Stewart Warner to just go with one already rebuilt?Thank You

To answer your question yes the Waltham is an excellent speedometer. The two posts above are Speedo rebuilders. Send your Waltham for a rebuild and rest easily.

Waltham made good watches so I would assume that their speedometers are also good.

The Waltham is a good speedometer, not as easy to work on as a Stewart Warner. There is only one means of calibrating the speed, whereas the Stewart has 2 adjustments. This makes the calibration easier and more accurate top to bottom. The yellow on the backround I believe is the change in color of the clear lacquer the factory put on top of the silk screened numbers to protect them. I have tried to use denatured alky to clean them and ended up wiping the yellow off and also the black number. If you need help, contact me.

I have cleaned the dial on one of mine that I thought was a goner with WD-40 on a soft rag, used very gently. Don't spray WD-40 on pot metal ever as it will cause old stuff to swell for some reason.
