Bat piss
I have some bats flying around in my shop at night. As they fly they dribble piss. I hate that it gets on my roadster, tools and whatever I have going on. I was wondering if anybody else has had to deal with this. I was thinking that maybe some loud obnoxious music might drive them batty and they will find someplace else to piss.
I remember watching a corny movie called Mars Attacks. Well the Mars guys were even kicking Jim Browns but then somebody played Slim Whitman song and their heads exploded. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FhQxZnSqc0 Maybe this will work on bats |

Re: Bat piss
There are high pitch noise emitters that work very well to evict most unwanted creatures. I would think that bats would be top of that list due to their navigation system relying unsound waves. Check at garden supplies, maybe even Home Depot.

Re: Bat piss
You should do a little research on this, I think you are headed in the right direction. If I remember correctly bats use a high pitched frequency (outside of what humans can hear) for navigation in the dark. Flooding the garage with this frequency might solve the problem.

Re: Bat piss
Bats are like mice, they can get in quite small holes. I would investigate around the eaves and vents to make sure screening has not rotted or been chewed through. Bats like the peak of the gables to hang so start looking there. You could build bat houses, and put the around, quite simple to build. I agree, that Slim Whitman songs could make their heads explode however, but at what cost? You would have to hear it too.

Back on the farm we would have one person throw rocks in the air after dark and then blow them up with a 12 gauge when their radar folowed the rock... Good thing shells was cheap.

Re: Bat piss
Worked for a guy fixing up house full of bats, not legal to kill here. The guy came in a truck that said Batman on the side. Must have known his trade well. He found a few holes in attic, put up some nylon mesh funnel shapes so they could get out but not in. After a few days came back, took mesh down and filled holes. They never came back. They can get into the smallest spaces, found a whole row of them once when taking off clapboard siding. They love heat and dark.

Re: Bat piss
I had two bats in my garage years ago. I left the door open one night and they came in and would not leave. They were in the corner of the garage. I shot them with a pellet gun. Problem solved.

Re: Bat piss
I agree that the bats in the shop are a problem but look into how important bats are before advocating exterminating them. Figure out how they are getting in and seal the entry point off.

Time to build a "bat room" for the bat urinal, sink, and commode!
Actually, if you can keep them outside, they eat a lot of bugs, including those that bite! |

Re: Bat piss
Back in 1970 before I got drafted I used to scuba dive with a former Navy Seal who said that you could make an explosive device with bat guano and motor oil with the right ignition source. Don't know if he was BS'n me or not BUT bat guano is similar to ammonium nitrate and motor oil is kin to diesel fuel so who knows.

Re: Bat piss
i had a bad bat problem in my pole barn for a couple years. yes, they piss on everything! finally i found where they were living, in a vertical stack of plywood up on my mezzanine storage area. the stack was not tight together, and where they could get between the sheets, they called it home. first i left the big doors open all night for them to go out and eat mosquitoes, then closed them just before sunrise. then, once the flock was down in size i had to get brave enough to go move the plywood. only a few remained, but there were lots judging from the pile of poop. since i closed down the nest, they have not returned.

Re: Bat piss
They eat lots of mosquitoes, around here they encourage building bat housing to keep them around. I would come up with a method that removes them from your shop without harming them if possible.

We used to catch hem when we were kids, baseball with cloth around it and a fishing net. Throw the ball in the air and when they chase after it catch them in the net!

Re: Bat piss
I had bats that crawled up behind the corrugated steel siding on a shed. I could hear them scratching on the steel. Some old gas in a hand spray jug got rid of them. All I had to do was squirt it up between the siding and the eave and the bats came flying out in less than ten seconds. By the next day even the little ones were gone. Gas or naptha works well but the old gas is free. Obviously you have to use your brain and not spray where there could be a fire hazard.
That method works well to drive snakes out of the area too. |

Re: Bat piss
When it comes to snakes in the shop, I always liked the way an old-time "H.A.M.B.er" got rid of them. He said he'd go out in the shop in the evening and spread several dozen Viagra pills around the shop areas they frequented. The next morning, he'd go out and pick up the snakes and stack them in the garbage can to be oicked up later in the day.

Re: Bat piss
To get rid of the bats in my shop I used bird netting tacked to the fascia board on the edge of the roof. The netting hangs down about 6’ from the bottom of the fascia and covers all the openings into the shop. When the bats flew out they hit the netting and fell to the ground then went on their way. When they came back the next day the netting stopped them from getting back in. Had to hang some fishing weights at 5’ intervals to keep the net from blowing up on the roof when the wind came up. The bats got the message that they weren’t welcome in the shop. Also built and put up two bat houses away from the shop and the house to encourage them to keep feeding on the mosquitos and moths. So far its been a win win for both bats and humans.

Re: Bat piss
another fun tid bit learned from a friend, bats can not get airborne from a standing start, they need to "free fall' a bit to get some air speed for flight. so, if you find they are getting in some hole in your siding you hang a bucket of water beneath the hole for them to crash into and drown. i agree though, they are good to have around, just not in your buildings

Re: Bat piss
I believe most bats piss over themselves, so when they take to flight it would flick off as well .. nasty having that all round the shed. Yes unsure if you can train them to do their biz in the "batroom" hahaha shared or boys and girls.....?????

Re: Bat piss
The bats hung out in the barn for years, and came through the vents in the cupola. Read that they have a highly developed sense of smell to go with their radar. Article recommended moth balls. Put some in the cupola in light cotton cloths sacks, Been bat free since then. You could also use oil of peppermint instead. Smells better than moth balls. I use that stuff in the car to keep the mice out.

Re: Bat piss
Bats can be a benefit as they can eat thousands of mosquitos every night. We use them here in the SE as we would not be able to stand outside for any period of time at night without being chewed like a corn cob.

Re: Bat piss
All of the above!!!!!
But get 'em OUT any way you're comfortable with... Turn on the lights! Block up the holes! Amp up the ultrasound! Build em a bunch of roosting boxes. But DON'T kill.em. Mosquito bites kill more people than you can imagine. So we need to help protect the bats. HOWEVER: BATS CAN, AND DO, CARRY RABIES. So, back to line #2: Get em out any way you...... TallyHo John.B |
