Re: 51 Merc solenoid
Most likely used for something like an aux. light (or something else) at one time.
What is the other side hooked to? And what is the grounding wire hooked to. The feed wire from the solenoid is most likely the battery side.

Re: 51 Merc solenoid
It's definitely not stock. The starter relay was the only one originally on there that I'm aware of.

Re: 51 Merc solenoid
If it has a button on the bottom, perhaps it was put there so the engine could be turned over when working in the engine compartment...like a remote starter button.

The starter relay is located forward of the battery box, not the rear. The wire gauge used to connect it seems to be small enough to operate as a switch for some sort of accessory as previously stated. |

Re: 51 Merc solenoid
Lincoln and Mercury used the Hydra Pack type hydraulics for windows, seats, and tops in that time frame. The shuttle valves were on each actuator and the relay was fixed to the hydra pack hydraulic pump assembly. The pump assembly was mounted near the firewall toe board and the inner fender apron on the right side in earlier cars then on the left side in the later cars. It's down in there where it makes a cramped area to get to the dimmer switch and brake light wiring. I've never seen a factory mounted relay in the location in question. Folks will mount all sorts of stuff to their cars.
