Best Stock Inlet Manifold?
What would be the best performing pre '48 inlet manifold? Iron or aluminium?
Thanks |

Re: Best Stock Inlet Manifold?
The Merc 4 bolt. You can also improve this by boring it to fit the 2GC.

Agree, while it is not pre 48 it is the best. There are several good carbs you can run along with the one Ron recommends. I have one from a dirt car that has a mopar carb on it that ran well.

Re: Best Stock Inlet Manifold?
Anyone ever looked at the stock French manifold? May have benefitted from a couple of decades of design experience??

Re: Best Stock Inlet Manifold?
Yes the 4 bolts line up pretty well, but the bore of the merc is alittle smaller and off set a small amt. Most people just bell mouth the intake in this area. This will eliminate any stumble off idle. I bore the intake to the same size as the 2GC. Now you can take advantage of the increase flow the larger carb can provide. Any machine shop should be able to do this simple job.

Here is a picture of a French engine. Not sure this intake will fit early Ford FH blocks from '32 to '53 but it does look like it has a four bolt intake.

Re: Best Stock Inlet Manifold?
In the old days, I made wood adaptors to fit just about any kind of carb base to a stock 3-bolt manifold without altering the manifold.

Wood...the forgotten natural resource material. I love it, and so true. Dies to stamp out fenders were made of maple wood....a very hard material. If it gets too embarrasing, sand and paint it silver. If only my grandfather were still here to read this!......he'd be smiling.

And the several variants of the '49-53 Merc are I believe the only USA manifolds with larger passages than the general run. No idea what the Frech or German solex manifolds used.

Ol' Ron>>>Adding a large carburetor to an intake without boring out the intake to match is ?????? >>>
That's what half-round wood files are for, Ol' Ron. You taper or funnel the throats of the wood adapter to mate the throat of the carb to the manifold. We don't want any sharp corners there, ya know! 8^) Jack E/NJ |
