1929, model a pickup bed sill plates?
looking for the exact dimensions for the lower bed wooden sill plates, I noticed that the front edge of the bed sills run off the frame rails as the frame tapers to the front, Is this normal, and do any of the two holes at the front edge of bed actually bolt through the frame? Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Steve.

Steve, are you talking about the wood that cantilevers off the back of the frame to support the bed? I will try to get out to the barn and measure it today. I believe it runs straight along the frame, and dose not reach forward to where the frame tapers.

I don't have the dimensions for the wood but here's a photo I took a few years ago that compares the wood to the holes in the frame.

I'd most appreciate if someone has the dimensions of those wood pieces, as they seem to be very over priced compared to the other wood pieces and would be easy to fabricate.

I would also like to get the dimensions and hole size & placement, if it is not a big problem. I assume the two pieces are symmetric.
Thanks Rusty Nelson |

I took the dimensions from the ones that I bought in 1984 for my 30 pickup. These are for the narrow bed not the wide bed. If you have problems being able to see the size please PM me with your email address and I will send them on to you. One is for the right hand side and one for the left. Hope this helps you. Note: If you double click the thumbnail then double click it again it will open bigger and you will be able to see the measurements. That is left double click Last edited by Afordman31; 01-25-2011 at 09:53 PM. Reason: Adding to message |

Re: 1929, model a pickup bed sill plates?
I noticed from about the center of rear spring forward the frame tapers narrower, and the sill plate seams to run off the outside of the frame. The front of sills, are they suppose to bolt to the frame hole just behind the cab?

The bed support bolt closest to the cab does not go through the wood, it goes through a support bracket bracket riveted to the bed. This bracket sits on the wood. The bolt actually passes through the bracket and is right beside the wood (to the inside of the wood), and bolts to the frame.
The next bolt rear of that goes through the bed and the wood, the bolt head can be seen from the outside of the bed just forward of the fender. |

Re: 1929, model a pickup bed sill plates?
The "bed boards" (those hardwood boards which make up the rear bed surface and are held by unusual metal "keeper strips" and unusual square bolts and washers) are shown in "The Ford Model A as Henry Built It" by DeAngelis on page 177. Mostly seen varnished today for appearance, they were usually painted quickly along with the bed - and the same color usually (but not always) green.
