Never plan to drive new purchased Ford flathead home, more than five minutes from home unless you know the owner very well. Bought '39 from collection on Friday Harbor WA. Made it off the ferry with plan to drive I 5 down to Seattle. Big mistake...Thank you U Haul truck with trailer. On the otherhand, new buyer drove same car 21 years later 400 miles from Orange Ct. Ca. to Marin Ct. Ca. up I 5 at 60 to 70 mph. Go figure....but will never not trailer a new flathead home!!!

The engine ran great, and the car drove great, at least until I got to the end of the driveway and turned into the street. It would turn left. but wouldn't turn back. Luckily I ended up back on the front lawn. Yep! There was the screwdriver, jammed into the steering linkage.

So what "30-9" predicted DID happen, at least once.

One of my work colleagues lost a screwdriver whilst servicing
his vintage Yak 52 airplane. He spent ages looking for it but never found it and assumed he had lost it somewhere in his hanger. A few weeks later while flying with a friend the screwdriver moved aft during aerobatics and jammed the elevator controls. He and his friend were both killed when the plane crashed in a park in our town . Tragic

^^Follow that. What a shame..

Anyway here's my little tip - not original but I do this and it works well. If you run 94s replace the 1/4" screw that holds the front of the body to the base with a stud and nut. I use a long bolt cut down. You can just use a hex headed bolt but I prefer a stud and nut. This allows the body to be removed while leaving the base in situ, which is sometimes helpful. It is more relevant when running duals as you can pull the carb bodies without disturbing the carefully set up linkages.

All this discussion about misplaced or lost tools reminds me of a screwdriver that went missing while making some adjustments on an idling engine. I found it a week later while painting the house - it was sticking out of the siding about 15 feet up. Good thing it wasn't sticking out of my head. I had left it resting on top of the radiator and then it was gone. I never heard a sound when it was launched into space.

NEVER leave loose tools or parts resting around a moving assembly, such as a fan or fan belt!!!

Need to start a bolt in a hard to reach spot? Tear a piece of paper off a corner of a newspaper or magazine and put over the head of the bolt and push the socket on. Attach extension and thread the bolt in (or nut on).

When reving up and engine, never stand in the path of where a fan blade would travel
should it fly apart. I have the welded up holes in my hood to prove it.

Houdaille shock absorbers should be filled while in the mounted position, so as to maintain the correct level of fluid with air space above, for heat expansion.

If your garage door relies on a rod mechanism to open, make sure the bolt that holds those rods to the handle mechanisn can't unscrew itself.

I slammed the garage door shut last night and heard a clunk and a clang inside. Guess what? couldn't open the door.

Had to break into my own garage this afternoon.

And about garage doors... Many garages have a side door, not visible from the street, vulnerable to break in. Install a simple old fashioned 2x4 across the door inside, removable only from the in side.

And More about garage doors... If you have the door springs that stretch when
the door is in the closed position, make sure you run a steel cable thru the spring
and fastened good a short distance beyond the ends of the stretched spring.
The cable will hold the spring in suspension, if it breaks, instead of flying around
the garage and messing up your pride and joy.
