Default chassis wipe down

Hi, this is Martin in Ohio.
Wanted to know what you use to wipe down your chassis.
My car is NOT a show car, but a decent clean driver.
It was restored in the early 80's and has a functional black painted chassis and running gear.
Periodically, I like to wipe down the undercarriage, but find that many products leave streaks and dry out to a grey film.
This would be wiping down the differential, axles, springs, perches,
brake backing plates, shocks.
Sure looks a lot better when these are shiny bright, but what cleaner to use?
Also, papers towels, shop rags?

Thanks,

Martin Mindling *A 11739*

Used to use Zip wax and cold water with a towel on my only show car.

On a driver I would use a lower pressure power washer and dish soap on axles and under the fenders. Then a paper towl dish soap and water on the frame rails.

I like to clean up the differential and that area with regular car wash soap. If it's really greasy, then I've used dish soap to cut the grease, then finish with car wash soap. I've had good luck using Meguiars wax as a final coat to keep things looking nice.

I use a 50/50 mix of stodard solvent and atf. Does not attract dust and looks great.

WD40 of course. Cuts the grease or oily film and the WD40 will disappear in a day or so.

I've been using WD40 for years. I also spray it on my engines and mush it around with an old paint brush before I wipe it down with blue paper towels. Caution, test first. Some spray can paints will disolve with WD40. Rustoleum doesn't.

What I find is really good for the firewall, engine, and undercarriage is to use the "Creme" Gogo brand hand cleaner,m available at most napa auto parts. In fact the napa brand non-pumice I believe is the same. Again,. Not the pumice kind with grit in it. The cream" blue and white hand cleaner removes dirt and grease... leaves a nice shine on it, doesn't hurt the paint and makes it look great. I have been using if for years for the cars I work on and you would be amazed. Give it a shot.

Flamingo,

You are right. Way too much time.

Now I'm getting down to the little bitty jobs.

So sad for a hyper-active Model A guy.

Regards,

Another vote for WD-40 and the blue "shop" paper towels.
