36 Cabriolet original shocks and links
Hi, my dad has a '36 Cabriolet with worn out lever shocks. He wants to install correct shocks and links, but we aren't sure what the shocks, arms, and links should look like. Currently the shock links in the front are 4 inches long and the rears are 3 inches. Can anybody enlighten me or share a photo?
Here are the front shocks, arms, and links: Here are the rears from inside the frame: And rears from the outside of the frame showing arms and links: |

Re: 36 Cabriolet original shocks and links
For 1936 pass cars the front and rear shock links are the same. p/n 48-18055 (3")

And the front shocks are post-'39 service replacements.

Re: 36 Cabriolet original shocks and links
Roderick, Here are some images of the correct 35 and 36 front shocks. You will notice that the 35 front has a smaller body than the 36. All links should be 3 inches between studs.

Re: 36 Cabriolet original shocks and links
Thank you very much, gentlemen. As someone pointed out, his car has hydraulic brakes, so he isn't going for show points. In that sense my post may be titled poorly as I asked for "correct" shocks. I mainly wanted to know what is supposed to be in the car so it works more or less as it should. Dad bought it from a very nice man who did some good stuff to the body but the mechanical work was a bit "creative" shall we say. Many thanks to all for taking the time to share your knowledge!

(I wrote this in Summer 2017) "Just yesterday I got the shocks that I had removed from my '35 Fordor. I put them on this morning and am very happy so far. I sent them July 20th and got them back Aug 26. His contact is [email protected], his shipping address is 788 Tea St, Charlemont, MA 01339. He gave me identification information on what I had taken off too, the fronts were 40-41."

Re: 36 Cabriolet original shocks and links
Are you a 100% that the front and rear shock links are the same length?
I was told that for 36 cabriolets the front are 4” and the back are 3”. Where did you find the information on the shock link lengths. |

Re: 36 Cabriolet original shocks and links
Besides being described in the 35-36 Book, here is some first hand source information. The drawing showing a 3" shock link came from The Benson Ford Research Center and parts listing 4 identical shock links came from the 1936 Chassis Parts List page 46.
Hope this helps clear up the issue for you. |
