B fuel pump experts ?
There's probably not that many '32 B fuel pump users, compared to V8 numbers, IMO. But, maybe someone who is well versed on this subject can help me here. Right now am a bit frustrated and wondering ...why the heck is it always the part that I buy that turns out to be an odd ball !
I've recently purchased a '32 pump carcass. What was rec'd in clean but otherwise unknown condition, as to whether ALL there. So, no big deal, eh, just order a 'kit' and be on my way to using this pump. NO, doesn't work that way. First thing asked...what is pump number...NO number on pump ! Only id is AC on inlet/outlet(?). Ok, send pictures. Sent two batches of pictures. 'Kit' came and I just now tried to put it together...nothing fit and/or belonged this pump. I will not say where kit came from, but the pump seller recommended their kit. Sorry for the long lead in . My question is, does anyone know how many types of 4cyl fuel pumps were made and why no uniformity ? Got about 2 hundred into this carcass already and getting a bad feeling about not being a rebuildable carcass I guess the bottom line is that I did not have to use Fords pump hole at all, but decided that with this new rebuild that I would. Where have all the good pumps gone |

Re: B fuel pump experts ?
ht,
If the pump is truly a B pump I think I can build it....I make my own kits. Any early V8 era Ford pump used ,shall I say, loose phenolic valves. The seat in the pump body MUST be refaced as well as the seal face on the brass keeper plate. Every teeny seemingly obscure detail must be attended to or it's a no go. Yes I even make those dinky little gaskets. Charlie ny |

Thanks for your atn/input , appreciated Yeah, we are talking '32 4 cyl pumps here. But, in this 'kit'..yes there are TWO of what you describe as 'phenolic multi sided valves(?)'. Geeze, you talk about a breakdown in communication...talked to her for half hour and sent two batches of pics...to get V8 phenolic whatevers !! If you do not mind, I can send you as many pics at you need/want to see if you can help me here. Need an email. |

Re: B fuel pump experts ?
There are a lot of pumps with the proper mounting flange, not very many with the proper lever---many different engines used pumps that look close, but have different levers and innards

Hardtimes,
Have you been to the Model A Ford Garage site? Lots of good info on 32 B stuff! Here is a link to the section on pumps: http://www.fordgarage.com/pages/bfuelpump.htm Keep 4-banging!

Re: B fuel pump experts ?
All of the operating parts in the upper portion and the diaphragm of an original '32-'34 four cylinder fuel pump are the same as those in an original '32-'33 V-8 pump. The major difference in the pumps is in the orientation of the inlet and outlet in the upper portion and the entirety of the bottom halves. Parts for '34 and up V-8 pumps are not useful when rebuilding the '32-'34 four cylinder pump.

Ok, I'll email you ! Also, thanks to you other guys.... I've read Vinces' site and although my '32 fuel pump carcass appears somewhat like the series G that he shows, that does not help my case. I'm sure that there IS a simple answer to what the carcass ,in my possession, came from and is useful on...but I'm easily confused !! You tell me , if it isn't fit for '32 4 cyl ? |

Re: B fuel pump experts ?
Your base is unusual in that it has twice as many holes in the perimeter than an original, but that should not affect the pump's operation.
Based on your photos, if the arm in the base is not badly worn where it contacts the camshaft and the return spring in the base on the arm is not broken or missing, what you are missing are the diaphragm, the shaft that the diaphragm is attached to, the nut and two special large cup-shaped washers that go on the top and bottom of the diaphragm, the filter screen, the two fine check valve springs, the two hex-shaped check valves, the gasket for the top cover, and the gasket to seal the acorn nut on the top of stamped steel cover. If your operating arm is badly worn, finding a NOS replacement could be a challenge. Original arms that have weld added to build up the worn area of the arm are often encountered on used pumps. The shaft that the diaphragm is attached to could also be hard to find (on its own). |

Re: B fuel pump experts ?
Hope your pump came with a lot more parts than your showing, as David mentioned above. They are hard to find!

Re: B fuel pump experts ?
The only odd B pumps I have seen are totally different non-original replacements that I think are 6 cylinder MOPAR ones with B lever added as a converion. I've seen a number of these, so I suspect some commercial rebuilder supplied them in the past.
They look nothing like real B ones...the inlet and outlet holes are small pipe thread fitted with the little brass adapter fittings needed to take Ford fuel lines. One year I spent some time at Hershey looking at miscellaneous fuel pumps to try to identify these lumps, and I found that early Mopar ones looked like them and had the B type slanted flange. Not even a useful kludge any more, as the arms are probably much harder to find in good condithion than the B castings! |
