My Dad had a factory stock 59 Caddy Coupe Deville in 1960 and it got 17mpg around home and 21 on trips. No joke.

Didn't Pickups get the 59 in '42?

Members of my dad's generation who started out driving T's said a T (20 HP) could get 20 mpg if driven carefully. Then came the A (40 HP) which also could get 20 mpg. Then the V8 (65-125 HP) which could also achieve 20 mpg. Next Y-blocks (over 200 HP) could do 20 mpg w/three speed and O/D. Then 300+ HP big blocks doing 20 mpg on the highway. Now 500-600 HP cars rated at over 20 mpg hiway. Progress has been made!

Understand what you are saying and have heard of people attempting to figure mileage this way before. It might be OK for a wild a** guess, but that is about it. It is not going to tell you much. There are too many guesses along the way to be of much value. Even checking it with the mileage and amount it takes to refill is somewhat of a guess, that's why it takes several and/or constant monitoring over a period of time to get any real idea of where you are on MPG.

No, the "5" in "59" indicates year of introduction 1945. Trucks did get the 8RT engine in 1947.

I guess we have to consider driving style and speeds as well. Careful and slow driving can give some high numbers although that style driving might not work in today's traffic. Remember that back in 1952 Mercury came in with some high gas mileage figures in the Mobilgas economy run. Overdrive equipped car.

My '48 F-1 gets 17 to18+. It has an 276 flathead with 2 carburetors, Offy heads, etc. Has 3.92 rear axle ratio. I don't drive it for gas mileage.
