39/40 Ford Headlight interchange

I am new here and have a question will 40 headlights bolt into 39 fenders?

right, I am talking about removing the whole 39 housing down to the bare fender and installing a 40 headlight assembly in the remaining hole?//?/

If they are DeLuxe fenders, they will work.

There is a local car for sale, he claims it to be a 40 standard,2 dr sedan, it appears to have 39 head lights, or is this an early 40???? Or has anyone ever seen this before, or is it a 39 with40 paperwork? I guess I should find the VIN is it only on the frame?

Don't do it! In my honest opinion it ruins the looks of a `39 Deluxe. The `39 headlights are one of it's prettiest features.

A couple years ago I had advertised to trade my `35 Cabriolet for a `39 Deluxe Coupe. I got a call from a guy that had a `Nice' `39 Deluxe Coupe. It had `40 headlights and the wrong seats, completely turned me off.

Don't get me wrong, `40 headlights on a `40 Ford is great, one of my favorite cars.

But it is your car....

I had a 39 deluxe coupe years ago with 40 deluxe headlight doors and seal beams. It's an easy change over.
If the car you are looking at has the "crank out" windshield it's a 39. The 39 also has the wipers at the top of the windshield. The 40 windshield is fixed with a rubber gasket and the wipers are at the bottom of the windshield and mounted in the cowl. This is the easiest way to tell them apart

The 39 and 40 are very different cars. 39 has a crank out windshield, the wipers are above the windshield, has no vent windows, has a floor shift, different dash, etc. Many telling features to determine if it is a 39 or 40.

keep the 39 Delux headlites, nicer looking than the 40's.
